Parents in Manchester will take to the city's streets tomorrow (Saturday October 29) to protest the rising cost of childcare in a halloween-themed march.

The 'March of the Mummies: Pregnant then Screwed' protest will take place in a number of major UK cities, including London, Manchester, Glasgow, Belfast, Cardiff, and Bristol. More than 12,000 parents across the nation are expected to join the rally calling on the government for reform on childcare, parental leave and flexible working.

Organisers are encouraging fancy dress, and say although the subject matter of the protest is 'serious', the marches are 'fun events' with music and fancy dress.

The march will start at 11am in St Peter's Square. Protestors will then walk down Oxford Road, before turning onto Whitworth Street and then heading back up Princess Street and towards Central Library.

On their website, organisers from Pregnant then Screwed said: "Childcare providers are falling like dominos, mothers are dropping out of the workforce in droves, the gender pay gap increased in 2021, and more families are now living in poverty. Have you had enough yet?

"These are political choices made by our Government and the only way we make them listen is if we organise. On Saturday October 29 we will be marching in 11 cities across the UK to demand that the Prime Minister priorities: childcare, parental leave and flexible working. Please join us, we need you!"

The first March of the Mummies took place on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at midday in six cities across the UK, including Manchester, and one city in California. The demonstration demanded 'recognition, respect and action' for working mums and dads.
