Is Cream Cheese Frosting Keto-Friendly?
Usually, regular cream cheese frosting or icing is not keto-friendly because it contains a considerable amount of sugar.
Luckily, it’s super easy to make keto cream cheese frosting that’s sugar-free and keto-friendly.
You can use it as keto icing for cinnamon rolls or spread on cakes. This is a low carb icing that you pipe on cupcakes or cookies too. It pairs perfectly with plenty of keto desserts.
Ingredients For Keto Frosting
This cream cheese frosting without powdered sugar is extremely balanced, not too sweet, and not too tangy. Just perfect. And just 4 ingredients are needed:
- Full-Fat Cream Cheese
- Unsalted Butter
- Powdered Sweetener
- vanilla extract
The texture of this no sugar cream cheese frosting is terrific, and sometimes I just eat it with a spoon to satisfy my craving for sweets. You can add a few fresh berries for the quickest low carb treat.
How to Make Keto Cream Cheese Frosting?
To make smooth as silk sugar-free cream cheese frosting, you need to use the right ingredients and follow the instructions provided in the recipe card below (Did you know that you can print all my recipes?).
- Bring the unsalted butter and cream cheese to room temperature to ensure that they will combine into a smooth paste without any lumps. It will take about 1-2 hours to soften.
- Make sure you’re using full-fat cream cheese and not a low-fat version of cream cheese spread.
- Use Powdered Sugar. It’s vital to use a powdered sweetener, also known as confectioners sugar or icing sugar such as Powdered Erythritol (affiliate link).
- A high-quality vanilla extract plays a crucial role as it gives that subtle luscious flavor.
- Use an electric mixer to cream together all the ingredients to make this blissful frosting and enjoy it with your favorite dessert.
Different Sugar-Free Frosting Flavors
As I said before, this sugar-free cream cheese frosting is super versatile and can be flavored in different ways. A dash of cinnamon or a tablespoon of cocoa powder can completely change the flavor and become your favorite.
Here are some of the best cream cheese frosting flavors:
- Pumpkin Spice: You’ll need about ½ tsp of pumpkin pie spice.
- Lemon: One tsp of the lemon extract is just enough to make a delicious frosting for my keto blueberry muffins.
- Coconut: Add one teaspoon of coconut extract.
- Gingerbread: Add one teaspoon of gingerbread spice.
- Coffee – If you’re just like me and love coffee, a few teaspoons of instant coffee powder make the unbelievably tasty frosting.
Tips for Making Keto Cream Cheese Frosting
- Use full-fat cream cheese, not the low-fat or spreadable cream cheese that is usually sold in a tub.
- I recommend using unsalted butter, so you can control the flavor of the frosting.
- Make sure to use room temperature cream cheese and butter so the frosting combines well without any lumps.
Can I use Keto Cream Cheese Frosting For Piping?
Sure, this keto frosting is perfectly thick to be piped and keeps the shape well. You can pipe cream cheese frosting in your desired patterns to decorate cupcakes or cakes. Just transfer the chilled frosting to a piping bag or use a plastic bag instead. Jut refrigerate the frosting for about 20-30 minutes before piping.
Is Powdered Sugar Keto?
Unfortunately, just like sugar, powdered sugar is not keto compliant. That’s why we are making this cream cheese frosting without powdered sugar. We’re using powdered sugar instead, and it’s just as delicious but with fewer carbs.
How to Store Frosting Leftovers?
Store the keto cream cheese frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. When ready to use, bring to room temperature and mix well with an electric mixer. Since it contains only natural ingredients and we don’t add any preservatives, it can’t be stored for longer than that.

Hi, Could I use Splenda instead of Swerve in this recipe?
I don’t recommend using Splenda as it’s not the healthiest choice when it comes to sweeteners.
