Glenn Frey – founding member of the Eagles – will be sorely missed in the worlds of music and philanthropy.
The music of the Eagles is many things to many people, reminding some of their youth, and others of the canyons and deserts that make up the wild, untouched areas of America. And at the heart of it all was Glenn.
“I’ve been helping kids — at-risk kids — for a long time,” he told The Desert Sun in 2010. “Thirty years. It seems like now times are even more troubled for young people.”
The rock legend first became active in children’s charities in the 1990s, when he started hosting inner-city kids in Colorado each summer.
Since then, Glenn was involved in a number of charity initiatives. He acted as honorary chairman for grand auctions for the Boys and Girls Club of Coachella Valley, and in 2010 headlined Celebrity Fight Night XVI. He also supported events to benefit the Tiger Woods Foundation and the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation.
With the Eagles, Glenn supported a massive number of charities, and did everything from signing guitars for charities such as the Alzheimer's Association to playing gigs for conservation initiatives like the Walden Woods Project.
He was quick with a joke and didn’t suffer fools, but it was always the kids in need that drove him to give back.
Thanks Glenn. There’s a hole in the world tonight.
