Country music legend Emmylou Harris founded Bonaparte's Retreat in 2004, which focuses on rescuing dogs whose time has run out at Metro Nashville Animal Care and Control.
In 1997 and 1998, Harris performed in Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair, promoting feminism in music.
Since 1999, Harris has helped organize an annual benefit tour – Concerts for a Landmine Free World. All proceeds from the tours support the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation’s campaign to assist innocent victims of conflicts around the world. The tour also benefits the VVAF’s work to raise America’s awareness of the global landmine problem.
