Host a Valheim Dedicated Server with Linode Marketplace

You asked, and we listened. If you want to experience the Viking survival game that everyone is talking about, we have you covered. Easily spin up a Valheim dedicated server to build your own realm and share with just your friends.

Valheim broke records on Steam by selling 5 million copies of the game in the first month—and it’s still technically in Early Access, so the builds, battles, and foraging quests are just beginning. Valheim is designed for 2-10 players. Deploying your own game server allows you to limit access to your realm, in addition to having more control over server performance.

We’ve simplified the process so you don’t need the skills of a sysadmin to earn Odin’s patronage. After purchasing the game from Steam, you can start playing on your own Valheim server in just a few clicks.

How to Deploy a Dedicated Valheim Server with Linode Marketplace

Navigate to Marketplace in Linode Cloud Manager and select “Valheim”.

Enter your game server options and SSH user credentials and select a Linode plan. We recommend using a minimum of 4 CPU cores and 2GB of RAM. To maximize your game server’s performance, select a Dedicated CPU Linode plan.

Your Valheim Server will complete installation anywhere between 5-10 minutes after your Linode has finished provisioning.

Open the game in Steam and follow the prompts to reach the server connection page.

Connect to the server using your Linode’s IPv4 address and port 2456 following this example: 192.0.2.0:2456.

And you’re ready to go.

Hello, just a quick question. Is it possible to set this server up to use a preexisting world, or will it only create a new one? if it is possible how would I tell the server which world to use?

    Hi Regina,

Great article, I have my server up and running. Just wanted to see if you could confirm. On the marketplace Valheim server, is everything set for auto updates of Valheim or do we need to take care of that manually?

    Many thanks!

      Hey John,

Thanks! I’m glad that the post was able to help you get things up and running. Currently, Linode doesn’t manage software or systems updates for any of our Marketplace Apps. You can either run those manually or create a cron job to check for updates on a scheduled basis.

Let us know if you have any more questions.
