Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have created a vast interactive atlas that may eventually help doctors use #precisionmedicine to target treatments for traumatic brain injury (#TBI) patients. Why this is important ➡ With 40-50 million new cases each year, the global incidence of TBI outstrips common neurological diseases, including stroke and Alzheimer's disease. Effective treatments have remained elusive because each TBI is different, but treatments are not. Priscilla F. McAuliffe, MD, PhD, associate professor of surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and breast surgical oncologist at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital led a multidisciplinary team that developed and evaluated a novel #EHR nudge that reminds surgeons to consider the value of #SLNB in patients who are flagged as potentially eligible to forgo the surgery based on their age and tumor biology. In a study published today in JAMA Surgery, McAuliffe advocates for a shift towards ‘right-sized care’—a customized approach to treating each breast cancer patient with meticulous precision. Congratulations David Okonkwo, professor of neurological surgery and director of the Neurotrauma Clinical Trials Center, who was sworn in on July 10 by Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin as one of five new appointees to the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia, his alma mater! The board is responsible for the school’s long-term planning, budgets and policies, comparable to the role of trustees at Pitt. The new members are to take their seats in August.
