Yesterday marked a significant milestone spanning more than 30 years of research, as UPMC administered the first breast cancer vaccine.
Today, our team administered the final dose of the first-ever vaccine for early-stage breast cancer. Vaccine science has been a focus at UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh for decades. Today marks a significant milestone spanning more than 30 years of research. This breast cancer vaccine, administered over three doses, attempts to stop cancer cells before they become invasive. As part of this clinical trial, our researchers will evaluate how well the immune systems of patients newly diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ respond to the vaccine. The research happening today in Pittsburgh drives the scientific breakthroughs of tomorrow. We are proud to bring together expertise from UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, the University of Pittsburgh, and Magee-Womens Research Institute. Today would not be possible without the visionary work of Dr. Olivera Finn, an immunologist at UPMC Hillman and Pitt. Dr. Finn has devoted her career to finding a vaccine for breast cancer. In overseeing this trial, Dr. Finn is working alongside Dr. Emilia Diego, a surgical oncologist and co-director of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital Breast Cancer Program, and Dr. Julia Foldi, a leading medical oncologist at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and Magee-Womens Cancer Center. We wish to thank A Glimmer of Hope Foundation, which awarded the team a grant to launch this trial. We are exceptionally grateful to Maria, a Pittsburgh area resident, for being the first patient to enroll in the trial. Clinical trial participants like her make medical advancements possible. Congratulations to the exceptional clinical and research teams that made today a reality. Your efforts will impact so many lives.

A first across Italy, UPMC-ISMETT in Palermo is successfully using augmented reality for minimally invasive cardiac procedures. Led by Prof. Francesco Musumeci, senior consultant in Cardiac Surgery, in early 2024, our team performed a left atrial appendage closure using AR technology, enhancing surgical precision with 3D holograms from CT scans.
