Tropical seabirds are essential to island ecosystems, enriching both land and sea with their nutrient-rich droppings. In the Indo-Pacific, many seabirds nest on atolls, which are vital for their protection and survival. Despite their importance, these atolls are often overlooked in global conservation efforts. 🔍 A team of researchers compiled global data on seabird populations and mapped their distribution and nutrient contributions. They found that 37 seabird species, totaling around 31.2 million birds, nest on these atolls, making up about 25% of the world’s tropical seabirds. 🐦 This study highlights the critical role of atolls for seabirds and the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these areas. Invasive species threaten climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, amplifying stress on ecosystems and communities. Shockingly, only 8 out of 26 US federal climate adaptation plans in 2021 mentioned invasive species, with just 4 considering their impacts meaningfully. 🔬 To bridge this gap, a research team conducted a gap analysis in 2023 and proposed 5 key recommendations for the 2024 plan revisions. This initiative, part of the Natural Climate Solutions team, aims to protect forest carbon storage from invasive pests and pathogens. These recommendations are also valuable for state, local, and international climate resilience policies. Living in greener areas isn't just about aesthetics – it's about health! The Green Heart Project, a groundbreaking study by the University of Louisville and TNC, has shown that planting over 8,000 trees and shrubs can significantly reduce inflammation levels, a key factor in chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and obesity. 🌱Residents in greened areas had 13-20% lower inflammation levels compared to those in less green neighborhoods. 🌳 Tropical forests are vital, housing two-thirds of the world’s biodiversity, regulating our climate, and supporting local communities. Yet, they face threats from selective logging and hunting. 🔍 A recent study in Gabon used acoustic monitoring to explore how biodiversity responds to these activities. The findings? Soundscapes in Forest Stewardship Council (FSC-certified) areas were more akin to national parks than non-certified logging areas. However, even forests logged over 20 years ago showed significant differences compared to untouched forests. 🔑 The takeaway? The team urges the protection of unlogged forests and the promotion of FSC or other certification schemes to preserve these precious ecosystems.
