Laurie H. Glimcher, MD, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute President and CEO, announced today that she will step down after 8 highly successful years, on October 1, 2024, and will assume the title of President Emerita. Benjamin Levine Ebert, MD, PhD, chair of Department of Medical Oncology and a world-renowned medical oncologist and researcher, was appointed by the Board of Trustees to serve as the next president and CEO of Dana-Farber effective October 1. The seventh president of Dana-Farber and the first woman to lead the organization in its 77-year history, Glimcher began her tenure in October 2016 with a relentless focus on improving outcomes for patients and accelerating cancer drug development. Dana-Farber is credited for playing a critical role in the development of 51% of all cancer drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration over the past five years. “Eight years ago, I began this journey with a deep appreciation for the extraordinary research that emanated from Dana-Farber since its earliest days and the clinical excellence that Dana-Farber provides patients and families,” said Glimcher. “And now, as I reflect on my tenure, I am intensely proud of what we have achieved in providing world class care for our patients, leading in innovation and discovering new treatments and cures.” Glimcher will continue her pioneering cancer immunology research at Dana-Farber and build on her legacy of mentoring young cancer scientists. “Dana-Farber has given me the chance to watch my son grow up, to bring a beautiful baby girl into my family, to travel again, and to live with a little more hope. When I was first diagnosed, I didn’t think any of these things would be possible. The words ‘thank you’ don’t feel like enough for giving me my life back. That’s why I got involved with the Jimmy Fund Walk, to show my immense gratitude to Dana-Farber.” “I also want to raise awareness for early-onset colorectal cancer, which is rising in people under 50 years old. I was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer at the age of 37. As a mom to a 15-month-old, the news was devastating to my family. Dana-Farber has one of the only dedicated centers for early-onset colorectal cancer in the country. It was an easy decision to come to Boston.” “Dana-Farber has been warm, compassionate, welcoming, and accepting at every appointment. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I often worry about how I might be treated in certain situations. Here, I have never felt that I needed to hide any part of myself to receive the care I needed. My family looks forward to supporting Dana-Farber and making the Jimmy Fund Walk a tradition every year.” – Allie, a Dana-Farber patient and member of team Beyond CRC in the Jimmy Fund Walk On October 6, we walk together against cancer for families like Allie’s at the Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai Motor America. “It’s been almost five years since my diagnosis. While ‘playing the long game,’ Dana-Farber has given me additional time and increased hope through improved treatments until a cure is found. I’m living proof of how research and care make a difference. I feel like I am part of a team there. Dana-Farber has provided me with a community and support network that helps make living with cancer easier.” – Alan, a Dana-Farber patient and participant in the Jimmy Fund Walk As a 2024 Jimmy Fund Walk Hero, Alan inspires participants by sharing his story. “When my husband, Steve, unexpectedly passed away last year, it was a shock to all of us. He was a giver and was the first to be there for anyone and all causes, especially the Jimmy Fund Walk.” “Steve’s first Jimmy Fund Walk was in 2015. He walked the full marathon and never turned back. He was always amazed by others walking that were going through their own struggles with cancer. He would say that walking 26 miles is nothing compared to what they are going through. Our daughters, Skyler and Sierra, and I wanted to keep his memory and passion for walking alive, so we formed our team, Steve’s Slingshot Monkeys, named for Steve’s fantasy football team. The silliness of the name represents Steve’s personality and zest for life.” “We are determined to keep that zest for life going and will continue walking and raising money for the Jimmy Fund. There are too many people affected by cancer. We will continue to fight for them while honoring Steve.” – Ann-Marie, a team captain in the Jimmy Fund Walk The Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai Motor America on October 6 is sponsored in part by Valvoline Inc. and Savings Bank Life. #JimmyFundWalk

Introducing more of our 2024 Jimmy Fund Walk Heroes! Heroes are Dana-Farber patients who inspire and motivate participants by sharing their stories along the course. Hanna, a chef and mom of three, is grateful to Dana-Farber for the amazing support she has received through her Lynch syndrome diagnosis. Sophia, 5, follows her motto closely: though she be but little, she is FIERCE! Mark, who is in treatment for stage IV gastrointestinal cancer, shares his advice: “Be good to people! People will always remember how you made them feel. Enjoy the small things in life. Take the trip and eat the cake. Most importantly, tell the people closest to you that you love them.” Warren, 2, loves playing with the toys at the Jimmy Fund Clinic, including the kitchen, trucks, and cars. His family is so grateful for everything that his team at Dana-Farber has done for them. Sarah, 36, never expected to be diagnosed with cancer. Although cancer has taken so much from her, she is forever grateful to her oncologists, specialists, family, and friends for helping her survive cancer. Linda, who has ovarian cancer, is thankful for the funds raised through the Jimmy Fund Walk to support Dana-Farber. She is directly benefiting from new therapies as a result of research. Paige, 7, says to anyone going through cancer, “You’ve got this!” Jim, who is in treatment for AML, will be participating in his 20th Jimmy Fund Walk this year. He walks with the hope that we can all have a life without cancer. He says, “I believe that one day, with our help, it will happen.” Michaela, 2, loves music, reading, trying new foods, watching hockey, and playing with her twin brother. Thanks to the Jimmy Fund Clinic, her family says, Michaela can enjoy being a vibrant 2-year-old. On October 6, we walk for them and everyone affected by cancer. The Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai Motor America is sponsored in part by WFXT Boston 25 News and Kiss 108. #JimmyFundWalk

"During my treatment at Dana-Farber, I encountered so many loving and amazing staff as well as other patients who were fighting just as hard as I was. One day, during one of my treatments, there was a girl who was in the elevator with me. Just as I noticed that one of her dolls had blue hair, she said to her mother, ‘When my hair grows back, I’m going to dye it blue!’ There was no doubt in her voice and no fear, she was most certainly going to have blue hair. I hope one day I get to see this young lady with her blue hair. Her determination inspired me, and it still does.” “I remember the days that I couldn’t even walk to the other end of my couch after chemotherapy. I told myself that if I could ever do so, I would run, walk, and bike for Dana-Farber patients like the girl in the elevator and myself. I owe my continued existence to Dana-Farber and I will support them in any capacity I can, for however long I can.” - Christopher, running the Boston Half™ for Dana-Farber There’s still time to join Dana-Farber's team in this fall’s Boston Half™! Bring hope to Dana-Farber patients and their families with your run: https://lnkd.in/eRjZyyDa
