This 4-hour intergenerational workshop on 'You(th) in Cities' by TED Countdown, Patricelli Center and UN Climate Change went by so quickly. We began with an introduction prompt - 'name the first city you call home" - and it was fascinating hearing about what home meant to people and also a deep reflection of the fact that Singapore isn't just a city, but it's a coastal/island city. Before we jumped into discussion, we moved on with an expertly moderated by Ahmed M. Badr, Ed.M., to gather quick responses by practitioners on the role of community centres in cities, the tensions of urban-rural of cities, and also the intersections of cities and health. There were great discussions on how city-living is seen as aspirational by a lot of young people, where the desires of urban living and the technologies we use deemed as the most advanced in human history. There was a call for us to look into our past and value indigenous knowledge systems and technologies, that exists for years in harmony with nature, as equally advanced. There was also big discussion on the importance of youth engagement especially as young people use city infrastructure a lot to get around, to network, and to play. Not forgetting conversations in Singapore where we are also trying to make city infrastructure friendlier to the elderly and for people with disabilities as well. But one thing I am taking home is also reflecting on where our 'island' identity is as urban residents. It's been largely so out of my consciousness but with increased discussion and awareness of indigenous groups like the Orang Pulau and Orang Laut (thanks to my dear friend Firdaus Sani and more), I'm hoping to reconcile this for myself. This workshop was intergenerational in that there was a mix of young people and senior practitioners in the room which provided a rather interesting space to think about how seniors can support young people in aspects such as building strategic alliances and tips on access to funding, as well as learning from young people about storytelling and outreach as well as ways to include youths in decision-making effectively. In particular, I had an incredible session with Adel Ramdani from Oak Foundation and Kate Goss from 128 Collective on various philanthropic mechanisms and funding mechanisms that young people can leverage and get support on. This sparked a lot of thinking and perspective, especially as we at the IPCC embark on the next stages of the Special Report on Climate Change and Cities. I appreciate the candor and banter in this insightful session, and thank you Shiv Soin, TED Countdown team, Patricelli Center and UNFCCC for the incredible planning and Riddhi Dutta for the invitation. I also so wish that this is something we can do in Southeast Asia to build intergenerational leadership and solidarity in the climate space. I'd love to connect with people who have been thinking about this already! #NewYorkClimateWeek #IPCC #Cities

By tailoring your event experience for specific audience groups, your team can expand the impact of local innovations. TEDxVarese’s TED Countdown event was a multi-part bonanza set in a unique venue within historic park grounds. While journalists on the climate beat learned about Europe’s emerging technology and solutions in an invite-only workshop, other attendees enjoyed equally robust “laboratories” where they explored topics like intergenerational collaboration and sustainable design through collaborative, hands-on activities. During breaks, the converted mansions’ many rooms and green surroundings offered a breath of fresh air for reflection and continued conversations.
