We recently caught up with our Kansas City Team where they’re constantly going above and beyond for our Customers! Because of Kansas City’s central U.S. location, it makes the airport a perfect location to serve as a key transfer hub in our Cargo network, allowing our Team to keep cargo moving coast-to-coast and north and south seamlessly! Plus, with the Kansas City International Airport - MCI opening the new airport back in February 2023, Southwest Airlines has seen continual flight growth (psst: we’re now up to 80 departures a day on peak days), leading to more opportunities to get freight to the places it needs to be, faster.

For over 25 years, Southwest Airlines has opened its wings to interns from around the world, offering a unique blend of hands-on experience, mentorship, and a chance to explore the exciting world of aviation. Our internship program isn't just about work; it's about fostering talent, encouraging curiosity, and creating a community of future leaders. This summer, we had the pleasure of hosting Adam in our Cargo & Provisioning department as a Revenue Management & Capacity Intern. Adam, a data enthusiast pursuing his master's in economics, found his perfect match at Southwest Cargo. He dove headfirst into the world of cargo operations, tackling complex projects, like his intern capstone where he evaluated the correlation between economic factors and air cargo industry data. Adam's passion for data and his desire to make a meaningful impact were evident in his work. Beyond his valuable contributions to our team, Adam embraced the perks of being a Southwest intern. With access to space-available seats, he embarked on weekend adventures, from jamming to live music in Nashville with fellow interns to dancing the night away at Lollapalooza in Chicago. Throughout his internship, Adam not only honed his skills in data analysis, project management, and cross-functional collaboration but also actively networked with colleagues across various departments, gaining insights into different aspects of the company and building valuable relationships. He truly thrived in the supportive and inclusive culture that defines us. As Adam prepares to take flight in his career, his advice to future interns echoes our program's core values: "Embrace the learning opportunities, be proactive, and don't hesitate to ask questions."

This year marks 25 years of us hiring Interns! What better way to celebrate National Intern Day AND National Hire a Veteran Day tomorrow than by highlighting one of our own? Farhan is now a Crew Scheduling Strategy & Portfolio Manager, but he started as an Intern in our People (HR) Department. His career in the Navy began right out of high school, and he continued to serve throughout college, his internship, and his early career. Transitioning from an internship to a full-time role, Farhan was able to manage his civilian and military careers simultaneously. He’s held various positions at Southwest and moved into a Leadership role last year. Farhan is proud to connect with and mentor current Interns while also participating in our “Heart With Heart” program that transports loved ones and fallen service members to their final resting place. He does all this while leading the Crew Scheduling Strategy & Portfolio Team. “The Southwest Family has supported me through all my career changes, and I’ve always felt encouraged to explore my passions and interests. I carry a sense of pride for Southwest even when I’m not at work, and I’m grateful for everything this Company has blessed me, my family, and all of our Cohearts with.” We employ more than 10,200 military members and 1,800 military spouses and are grateful for their sacrifices and contributions. As we celebrate 25 years of our Intern Program, we proudly recognize Farhan for his dedication to our Company and Country!
