The composites industry is widely appreciated for the diversity of its products and applications. Equally important for composites is growing the diversity of our leadership, including representation of women. In our business, we believe we have a role to play in this given our local partnerships and industry connections. Last week, more than 50 industry leaders and Women in the Composites Industry (WCI) ambassadors gathered at our World Headquarters in Toledo, Ohio, to take part in a mentoring session focused on networking, career planning, and empowerment of women in the industry. The event featured a panel discussion with leaders and professional coaches discussing the challenges and benefits of mentorship. This included career development and building authentic and trusting connections; capturing and leveraging external feedback for development; and empowering women through courageous conversations, being one’s authentic self, and building trust. Earlier this month, we also hosted a luncheon for women in composites during CAMX 2024. The lunch event featured 60 industry representatives and leaders networking and discussing opportunities to help drive our industry. Key topics included marketing, material conversion, and business challenges. We support events like these because they provide essential connections, tools, and strategies for the development and advancement of women leading in composites. And this is fundamental to fully realizing the considerable talent, perspective, and insights women bring to the innovation, growth, and progress of our industry. Opportunities Abound; Visionary Leaders Required   The challenges and opportunities of the composites industry are out there as the 10th edition of CAMX, our largest industry event in North America, takes place. Major events like CAMX are a great forum for sharing and learning about the latest developments in our industry. They also serve as an opportune setting for reflecting on the state of composites. Like most industries today, there are multiple dimensions to the current state of composites. On one hand, we are seeing meaningful signs of growth. Industrial production is forecast to grow in the coming year, driven by North America and Europe. And demand for glass fiber remains robust, outpacing global IP growth. At the same time, we face the very real challenge of softness in several markets and the potential for slower-than-expected economic growth in select regions. Against this backdrop, it may seem logical to direct our focus inward. “Focus on what we control,” we tend to say. Indeed, there is wisdom in ensuring we are running a “tight ship,” competing hard and smart, and maximizing the value we create and deliver. However, I believe there is danger in closing the aperture too tightly on our role within the composites industry. As we embark on CAMX 2024, I offer my own challenge to our team – and my industry colleagues – to embrace the opportunity this event provides as a catalyst for sharpening and strengthening our industry narrative. While we take pride in competing with one another on a daily basis, we should also remember that we are all competing with traditional materials. We all benefit from a strong composites industry. And this outcome is supported when we work together to convey the very real benefits composite materials offer to achieve innovative and increasingly sustainable solutions through material replacement. As with so many other aspects of life, we are stronger when we are inclusive. In this case, this means that our narrative must encompass the full breadth of remarkable products, solutions, and voices each of us possess. Adopting and articulating a shared vision for composites is critical to capturing the undeniable opportunities for material conversion. So, even as we each continue our efforts to create differentiated value, we must also step up together as visionary leaders and advocates for our industry if we are to more fully realize the promise and power of composites. #CAMX2024 #Composites #MakeMorePossible
