A career in #sustainability comes with a unique set of challenges, which is why two of our Sustainability Initiative interns David Merkel, Venture Fellow at Third Sphere, and Hibah Khan, Supply Chain Sustainability Initiative intern at Smith & Associates, have provided valuable advice to anyone embarking on an environmentally impactful career. 🤝Start talking to companies you might want to work for early — build a rapport so you can hit the ground running over the summer, and remove unnecessary uncertainty or anxiety. ✍️Develop skills in data analysis and environmental science — alongside soft skills such as effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and strategic thinking — through your coursework, volunteering, and online learning. 🌱Be proactive, adaptable, and a strong advocate for sustainable practices, as this will greatly enhance your effectiveness and impact in any sustainability role.

Stress and anxiety due to the ever-changing climate is greatly impacting young people around the world. To lessen this climate anxiety, a group of Massachusetts Institute of Technology students has teamed up to ensure they’re doing their part. From harnessing hydrogen power to collecting climate change data with autonomous boats, this team of MIT students is using their passion to address climate change and discover climate solutions. Nisha Patel, (MBA ‘25) is on a mission to reshape business strategies to reverse environmental harm to marginalized communities and promote equitable access to #cleanwater and healthy food. The MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative aims to provide students the knowledge and skillsets to guide companies and organizations to take on sustainability challenges. Several Sloan MBA students are currently focusing on ways to make water and food systems more sustainable. For example, Nisha Patel, MBA ‘25, aims to ensure equitable access to vital resources like clean water and nutritious food. Alexa Katz, MBA ‘24, focuses on incorporating sustainability into the food and beverage sector. In addition, Andrés Bisonó León, MBA ‘23, is developing a seaweed harvesting solution aimed at advancing social development and addressing climate change adaptation and mitigation. John Sterman, MIT Sloan School of Management Professor and Sustainability Initiative Co-faculty Director, remarks on the 2024 UN Environment Programme Emissions Gap report, telling The Associated Press that “there’s one year less time to cut emissions and avoid climate catastrophe,” in order to keep warming at or below the 1.5°C #ParisAgreement goal. “Catastrophe is a strong word and I don’t use it lightly.” Though emission cuts are feasible with today’s technology, the majority of the world’s 20 richest countries, which are responsible for 77% of the carbon pollution in the air, aren’t reaching their emission-cutting targets.
