    Uncontrolled UC has a severely negative impact on a patient’s quality of life. The main management goals for ulcerative colitis should be to induce and maintain mucosal healing, achieve remission, prevent morbidity, including hospitalisation, and improve QoL for UC patients.¹,² Remission is seen as a combination of clinical parameters [stool frequency ≤ 3/day with no rectal bleeding, and no bowel urgency] and no mucosal lesions at endoscopy.²,³ Current therapeutic management includes successful induction of both clinical and endoscopic remission, followed by a steroid-free maintenance strategy.²,³ What do you think should be the main management goal for your patients with UC?

    HRQoL and PROs are accepted as important endpoints in clinical trials and as management targets in real practice for UC.¹ At time of diagnosis, many patients with UC have a high prevalence of mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, which affects HRQoL. Yet most UC patients don’t report these feelings to their doctors. PROs show that depression and anxiety correlate with disease severity. Therefore, understanding the mechanism behind UC-related depression and anxiety, is of clinical importance for the management of UC-related comorbidities and to improve the HRQoL in UC patients.¹,² Do you address anxiety and depression in your UC patients?
