  • After facing a flash flood in Luangnamtha, which left many families displaced and communities devastated. Last week, IOM joined forces with the UN agencies, development partners, and central and local government officials. Together, summarized the impacts and conducted a comprehensive Needs Assessment and Early Recovery Planning for the flood in Luangnamtha Province, Lao PDR. This initiative aims to respond to priority needs and plan for future disaster prevention. On the same occasion, IOM also provided supplies to the Luangnamtha Provincial Labour and Social Welfare Department, which will be distributed to ethnic schools where students lack clothes and bags due to the flood. In these challenging times, our collective efforts and solidarity bring hope and support to those in need, ensuring that no one is left behind.

  • The 17th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on the Implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers (17th ACMW Meeting) convened on the 24-25th September, 2024 in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR, gathering focal points from all ASEAN Member States (AMS). IOM had an honour to join the Open Session together with other development partners showcasing joined-up efforts in regard to protection and promotion of the rights of migrant workers in the region. As a back-to-back event, the second edition of the ASEAN Migration Outlook was officially launched, featuring the complexities and interrelationships among different factors involved in climate-induced human mobility. In the context of growing vulnerability to extreme weather events in the ASEAN region causing more than 75 million displacements in the decate to 2021, the Outlook lays the knowledge foundation for the AMS dialogue on the climate change and human mobility nexus and identifying priority issues and opportunities to synchronize local, national and regional policies to respond to the climate change impacts. #IOMLaoPDR #PROMISE #LMI #ASEAN
