🚀 Did you know that IBM played a key role in the U.S. Space Shuttle program? 💫 The U.S. Space Shuttle program, announced in 1972, was a NASA initiative designed to provide reusable spacecraft for human spaceflight missions. In 1981, the first Space Shuttle orbiter, Columbia, made its maiden flight, marking the beginning of operational missions. From the very start, IBM Federal Systems Division was instrumental in developing the computer systems that controlled the shuttle's flight, providing software and technical support to ensure mission success. 🌟 At IBM, we're proud to have contributed to this historic program. We believe that innovation and collaboration are essential to achieving great things, and this is a shining example of what can be accomplished when people come together to pursue a common goal. 💪 So, what do you think about the Space Shuttle program? “As many CEOs have said, IBM’s biggest asset is its people, and I couldn’t agree more.” Meet Francisco, who returned to IBM in 2023, two years after leaving his previous role. “When I first joined IBM, it was both refreshing and challenging as I led communications for the Federal and Public Sector in the US. This role gave me a sense of purpose and helped me become a better communicator when I transitioned back to the public sector. After leaving IBM, I led communications for a U.S. Senator, honing my skills and learning to manage with compassion.” Francisco’s main reason for returning to IBM was the need for better work-life balance. “When the opportunity to return came up in 2023, I realized I missed the work-life balance, my fellow IBMers, and the inclusive culture at IBM. Now, I’m excited to be part of our Gen AI storytelling efforts and contribute to IBM’s Diversity & Inclusion work. As a Latino LGBTQ+ immigrant, being in a place where I can advocate for my community is invaluable.” Thank you, Francisco, for sharing your story! 💙 👀 Looking to return to IBM? You won’t believe how Neil from the UK reconnected with a former IBMer from Germany —20 years after they last worked together in the US! “In 2000, I was an IT Director when a colleague mentioned she was contacting someone at IBM. Out of curiosity, I asked who it was. I couldn’t believe it—it was the same person I’d worked with almost 20 years earlier in Poughkeepsie! 😲 Despite IBM Germany having 20,000 employees, it was him—and to top it off, they were a couple!” This surprise encounter brought back memories of Neil’s early days at IBM, where he started in 1981. One of his most memorable projects was working on large systems in Poughkeepsie with a global team 🌍. “I worked closely with colleagues from Australia, Germany, and the UK. We put in long hours to bring the project to life. That experience made me appreciate IBM’s teamwork and the lasting friendships we built. 🤝” After some time away, Neil rejoined IBM in 2002, drawn back by the same innovative culture. His journey was a mix of career highlights and personal connections, bringing him full circle 🔄. “IBM even shaped my personal life. When I left again in 2007, I chose to live near La Hulpe, where I’d spent many special weeks at IBM’s European Education Centre.” Now living in France, Neil enjoys a slower pace of life but never misses the Tour de France 🚴♂️. Thanks, Neil, for sharing your story! 🙌 Have you ever reconnected with a former IBMer in a surprising way? Share your story in the comments! 💬 #IBMAlumni #CareerStory

"I came back to IBM because I have many great relationships and having been around the block a little bit, I know the work environment fits my personality.” Robert's first job after college was at a startup, where he discovered his passion for Business Intelligence tools like BIRT (Business Intelligence Reporting Tools). As an independent consultant, he worked with IBM Cognos and eventually joined an IBM project with a major American coffeehouse chain. There, he met great people and had his first experience with Agile, which became his preferred method for large projects. He earned a reputation as the “BIRT guy” in Tririga and Maximo, IBM’s Sustainability software. The Nigerian-born IBMer is currently based in the state of Florida. His first project as a full-time IBM employee was with one of the largest corporations in the global retail industry. He says this project had one of the largest implementation teams he’d ever been a part of. Robert eventually took a break from IBM. During this time, he worked with IBM partners and even got his first experience on a large government project with the state of New York as an independent consultant. So what brought him back in January 2024? It was thanks to those great relationships and IBM’s work environment. Now, Robert is a Managing Consultant in IBM Consulting, where he leads the BI development with IBM's Sustainability Software. “Joining the federal side of IBM Consulting was different than my first time around because I didn’t have any previous relationship with anyone in my group.  Our leadership on the federal side has created an environment where it has been easy for me to slide back in. Government is very different from the private sector and there has been a bit of learning for me in the first few months of returning.  I am glad to be a part of IBM’s push to help modernize the US federal, state, and governments around the world.” 👀 Looking for a return to IBM?
