📢 "Participants in clinical trials should be representative of the patients who will use the medical products" 📢 The FDA has issued a long-awaited draft guidance intended to increase clinical study enrollment of participants of historically underrepresented populations to help improve the data the agency receives about the patients who may potentially use the medical product. Enhancing diversity within clinical studies not only facilitates broader applicability of results across a broad spectrum of patient populations, but also enhances understanding of the disease or medical product under study, thus providing valuable insights to inform the safe and effective use of the medical product among patients. The theme for Pride Month 2024 is Medicine: Under the Scope 🔍 As we reflect on sexual and gender minority leaders in healthcare and establish the critical movements needed to improve inclusivity to queer patients, one point has struck home for me: the erasure or after-thought nature of LGBTQIA+ strategy in DEI initiatives. Just last month, I had the honor of speaking at the 2nd Annual Health Equity Congress in Atlanta. I’ve had some time to reflect on what I’ve learned from other fellow professionals on how we can all make a difference in the clinical trial space. Here were some of my takeaways: 1. Let’s Emphasize Our Patient’s Needs -  It's important to really understand what our patients are going through, not just their health conditions, but the daily challenges they face because they live with these diseases every day. By collecting and using data from their real-life experiences, we can learn more about what different groups of patients need. This helps us design better clinical trials that focus on these needs and make sure all kinds of patients are fairly represented. 2. Education is Key - Everyone involved has a role in educating patients—this includes doctors, local communities, groups that advocate for patients, and companies that sponsor health research. By working together, we can give clear and accurate information about important clinical trials. This helps fight against wrong information about health, especially for those dealing with autoimmune diseases and rare conditions. It's like being part of a team; everyone needs to be active and involved, not just watching from the sidelines. 3. Patient Voices Make Better Trials - When we let patients help design clinical trials, the trials become more useful and easier for them to participate in. This cooperation makes the trials more directly relevant to their needs and builds trust. More trust means more people are likely to join and stay in these trials. By listening to what patients say they need and prefer, we make sure the trials are truly helping them in the best way possible. It's more than just informing our patients; it's about ALL of us actively listening to them and incorporating their experiences into our practices. While we may be the experts, patients live with their conditions daily, making their insights invaluable. By integrating these strategies, we aim to reach more underserved communities and ensure that trust, transparency, and improved success rates are achieved through clinical trials. #PatientRecruitment #HealthEquity #ClinicalTrials #HealthLiteracy #Heathcare #BioTech #ViuHealth

The Health Equity Congress in Atlanta earlier this month was an outstanding exchange of ideas between industry, community partners, solution providers and patient advocates. It was also my first opportunity to moderate a panel with some amazing site personnel leading the charge on increasing equitable access to healthcare and research. Plus, I got to see my lovely friend Bianca Green BSN, RN speak on a panel discussing strategies to reduce burden for underrepresented patient populations ♥️ It was fantastic to meet so many amazing partners dedicated to serving our communities! #healthequity #clinicaltrials #servingpatients #servingcommunities
