A recent poll of current MPs shows 94 per cent support the net zero by 2050 target, but many are misinformed on the technologies that aim to deliver this. Most notably, surveyed MPs unveiled a significant knowledge gap when it comes to hydrogen and its application in a green economy. The poll was carried out by YouGov on behalf of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit. According to a Deloitte report on sustainable consumer behaviours, appetite for reducing emissions have plateaued among consumers amid growing fatigue and scepticism. Consumer behaviours are an essential component of the UK’s sustainability journey, with 24.6 per cent of total UK greenhouse gas emissions coming from households as a result of consumer expenditure. These emissions are primarily from heating and travel, but the ways people shop are a large contributing factor. The government is funding a £1m programme to help UK companies overcome regulatory and market barriers - and generate new opportunities to export offshore wind products and services globally. A new report has revealed a significant gap between organisational confidence to deliver net zero and the actual ability to achieve these goals. The research from Equity Energies, titled 'Carbon Admissions: We don’t know what we don’t know', looks into business attitudes and sentiments regarding net zero across hospitality, manufacturing, local authority and private healthcare sectors. However, an overwhelming majority of respondents admit that they lack knowledge in one or more fundamental and foundational processes required to advance net zero, with 98% admitting to some knowledge gap. Sainsbury's has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with global asset management firm Capital Dynamics for 100% of the energy generated at its newly operational Pines Burn Wind Farm. The PPAs form part of company’s sustainability strategy, ‘Plan for Better’, as Sainsbury’s aims to minimise its carbon footprint and promote environmental stewardship. According to Sainsbury’s director of property, procurement and EV ventures, Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s was the first UK retailer to start purchasing wind-generated energy directly.
