As teams across Google work to make AI even more helpful for our users, we're setting a new standard for responsible innovation with a full end-to-end approach. Our most recent paper looks at our current process for pre-launch and post-launch controls — the AI Responsibility Lifecycle: 1) Research to understand the capabilities and limitations of new technologies 2) Design and test continuously, using safety thresholds to fine-tune models 3) Govern by assessing risk, focusing on mitigations and testing for safety and fairness 4) Share best practices so organizations of all sizes can benefit from your learnings The paper offers insight into how we developed each step in this process, with recent examples and practical tips for how others might apply these learnings. As we continue learning more through our lifecycle approach to AI responsibility, we commit to sharing knowledge with the whole ecosystem. To learn more about our approach, view the paper at https://goo.gle/3RJmOou

Cyber threat actors possess certain advantages in cyberspace: they can choose from a wide variety of targets and need only succeed once. In contrast, defenders must protect an increasingly complex terrain and need to be successful at all times. This dynamic, referred to as the “Defender’s Dilemma,” has plagued organizations and users for decades. We believe AI affords the best opportunity to upend the Defender’s Dilemma, tilting the scales of cyberspace to give defenders a decisive advantage over cyber attackers. We’re applying AI to security in three ways: 1. Secure AI from the ground up 2. Empower defenders over attackers 3. Advance research cooperation to generate scientific breakthroughs Read our full report on how AI can strengthen digital security here: https://lnkd.in/gJFJAXZm

Google is rolling out passkeys for our Advanced Protection Program (APP), which helps to protect people at high risk of cyber attacks, such as journalists, elected officials, political campaign staff, and human rights workers. While users traditionally needed a physical security key for APP, now they can secure their account with a passkey, which is an easier and more secure alternative to a password. We’re also excited to share our latest partnership with Internews to provide journalists and human rights workers with safety and security support through Internews’ global network of security partners and trainers. This program will span 10 countries including in Asia, Latin America, and Europe. To date, our partner network has distributed more than 200,000 free security keys worldwide and provided security training in 20 countries, from Asia and Europe to North America. Excited to share the global launch of Bower! This innovative Swedish startup is tackling the global waste crisis head-on with their AI-powered app that helps people recycle correctly. 🏆Last year, Bower won Google.org's Impact Challenge and received both funding and a Fellowship, which meant a dedicated team of 5 Googlers working full-time, pro bono, to help them develop a state-of-the-art computer vision model. This model can accurately identify product types and materials, then provides users with local recycling instructions to help anyone recycle correctly, no matter where they are. Congratulations to both the Bower and Google teams for their hard work and dedication to making a real difference in the fight against waste! https://getbower.com/ #sustainability #recycling #AI #Googleorg

Critical infrastructure has become an increasingly common target for cyberattacks. That’s why Google Cloud is working with organizations across the globe to help protect the infrastructure we all rely on. As NATO leaders gather this week, Google Cloud is proud to help build a safer future. 1. We’re joining forces with defense organizations to deploy advanced AI technology to ensure digital defenses remain secure. 2. We’re securing patient data for hospitals with industry-leading threat detection and response, speeding up cyber threat response time to hours instead of weeks. 3. We’re protecting student and teacher data in schools with Chromebooks and Workspace for Education, which are secure by default. 4. We’re working with local governments to protect public infrastructure and keep critical systems online 24/7. Learn more at https://goo.gle/4bCPSow

Our partner, Google.org, recently released a research brief, which explores the potential of AI to drive meaningful impact across the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The brief highlights how advancements in AI are already being used to tackle a wide range of societal issues, including education, healthcare, and climate action. The brief draws on Google’s internal and collaborative research efforts, technical innovations, and social impact initiatives, highlighting DataKind’s Student Success Tool (SST). The SST helps academic advisors identify, reach out, and build success plans with students who are in need of support more efficiently. John Jay College (CUNY) increased senior graduation rates from 54% to 86% in two years. With the support of Google.org, the SST is being scaled nationwide to support improved education opportunities.
