The Aspen Institute's Energy & Environment Program addresses critical energy, environmental, & climate change issues.
About us
The Energy and Environment Program (EEP) addresses critical energy, environmental, and climate change issues through non-partisan, non-ideological convening, with the specific intent of bringing together diverse stakeholders to improve the process and progress of policy-level dialogue. This enables EEP to sit at a critical intersection in the conversation and bring together diverse groups of expert stakeholders. In addition to energy and environmental policy, which the program has been addressing for several decades, EEP is now actively and purposefully engaging in climate change policy – mitigating the effects of climate change, adapting to the inevitable impacts of climate change, and helping to build relationships for cooperation needed to achieve these goals amongst people and nations.

Program Manager, Center for Rising Generations at The Aspen Institute | 2x University of Florida CJC Alum 🐊🐊
I had an extraordinary experience at NYC Climate Week last week. It was heartening to reconnect with so many remarkable young climate leaders with whom I’ve had the privilege to work with over the years. As I participated in a series of workshops, plenaries, roundtable discussions, and art activations—many of which were led by these inspiring individuals—I was struck by a profound shift: the tables have turned in the best way possible. Normally, I am the one organizing events to help these young leaders learn, grow, and network with their peers and experienced professionals. Now, I find myself attending their events, eager to learn, grow, and connect alongside them. This is the dream for anyone working in the youth space—to transition from leading exceptional young people to being led by them. I am incredibly proud of these young leaders and can’t wait to see the remarkable changes they will bring to our world. We have so much to learn from one another, and intergenerational collaboration and conversation are key to retaining wisdom while ushering in innovation and new ideas. Young people have embraced this concept, and I hope everyone else will too. I am so lucky to get to do this work. 🥰 Steffanie Munguía Bodhi Patil Jonathan Gilmour Pooja Tilvawala Nick McGirl Carissa Cabrera Sophia Powless Luke Norris Aspen Ideas The Aspen Institute The Aspen Institute Energy & Environment Program (EEP) ChangemakerXchange Youth Climate Collaborative #ClimateWeekNYC

We heard a lot of very different perspectives and ideas last week at #ClimateWeek about how to solve the climate crisis. Check out some of these key insights and why we think they ALL are essential to solving the climate crisis. 💡 https://lnkd.in/gFRYuaJ6 María Ortiz Pérez Nadia Phyu Catherine (Kitty) Pollack Taylor Goelz 👏

Our team is back from an action-packed #ClimateWeek and feeling grateful to our partners, inspired by the collective action we can take when we work together, and appreciative of the moments to connect the dots between people, ideas, and projects. 💡 Sharing just a few of the highlights: María Ortiz Pérez and a group of international leaders agreed that it is possible to have a visionary narrative of what our international climate governance system could look like, while still collecting quick wins and responding to the urgency of the moment. Greg Gershuny and Michael Fitzpatrick asked business leaders to imagine what they might do with a magic wand as they work hard to meet their net zero commitments. Ingrid Irigoyen shared the impact that climate-leading companies through Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) have had in kickstarting a market-driven transition to cleaner fuels in the global shipping industry. John Kerry and Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran talked private capital and the government's role in getting it to move through de-risking and concessional funding. Aspen Ideas Katie Cassetta Graham Veysey Laura Schifter, Chancellor John King, the Known team and others brainstormed on what it will take to empower all young people with the understanding, knowledge, and skills they need for success in our changing climate.

For #ClimateWeek I got to join John King and incredible leaders working across education, climate, communications, marketing, philanthropy and more to talk about what it might take to empower all young people with the understanding, knowledge, and skills they need for success in our changing climate. As an educator for over 20 years, I wholeheartedly believe in the power of education--through learning in school, visiting a museum, watching a movie, playing a video game, or having conversation with a parent--to help people build understanding and support societal change. Our narratives on climate have not yet sufficiently resonated with people. And we have yet to fully tap into the power of educators, communicators, parents and more to make a difference, build social and political will, and accelerate the urgent and lasting solutions we need. I'm so excited to be working with leaders like Valerie Rockefeller Gary Knell Brad Roth Ross Martin and more to change that! Huge thank you to the team at Known Ollie Zimmermann Roberto Lartigue Nancy Lugassy Jenny Ochsner and more for the partnership and welcoming us to your NYC home! And always huge thanks to the team at EnergyEnvironment Program Greg Gershuny María Ortiz Pérez Michelle Faggert Sophia Powless Catherine (Kitty) Pollack! So excited about the work to come!

As part of #ClimateWeek, Known welcomed our partners at The Aspen Institute, along with a powerhouse lineup of leaders and action-takers led by SUNY Chancellor John King and Aspen's Laura Schifter, in our New York office, today to address how we can change the narrative and bring people together to secure our shared future. The mission is clear: empower young people with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Partners from education, climate, philanthropy, marketing, and advocacy came together to explore collaborative opportunities to strengthen social and political will, locally and globally. Together, we are taking bold steps toward a sustainable future for our youth. Climate Week and every watering hole has lines. I ended the day with a spectacular view from the the top of the Ritz, literally, but the first stop was a dialogue at the Aspen Institute - led by the The Aspen Institute Energy & Environment Program (EEP). The conversation was about what's holding back institutions with significant climate responsibility, and how to address the too-slow pace of change. The moderator started with this list of to dos: Narrative, Governance, Incentives. The attendees are deeply engaged in global public (and private) institutions, but we could have been talking about corporations. We have succeeded at opening the Narrative about corporations and who they serve, but Governance is locked down on the old model. With NARRATIVE about corporate purpose more fluid, the role of the board is now in play. (Rethinking incentives to take down the full tilt to shareholder-extractive thinking will follow when we have more directors with clarity about why they are there.) Jeff Sonnenfeld quotes the late governance guru, Bill Donaldson - the builder and rebuilder of remarkable institutions, from DLJ to my alma mater, the Yale School of Management, to the NYSE. Bill inhabited more board rooms in his lifetime that we can count. Wisdom from Bill Donaldson (thanks Jeff Sonnenfeld): “...I think the board’s role is to insulate the CEO from short-term considerations. The board [has] a responsibility...which goes beyond next quarter’s earnings and beyond next year’s earnings. And it has a responsibility, although you can’t shout this from the pages of the Wall Street Journal, to serve something more than just the profit motives of the shareholders. I think the board provides an insulated jacket for that." Not sure the The Wall Street Journal is ready, but we are seeing experimentation and are at the beginning of the beginning of a generational shift in boardrooms. Will it make a difference in time to help on climate? Not sure, but as one participant noted yesterday, change can come swiftly when the right examples and agents of change are in place. At the Aspen Institute Business & Society Program we are hunting for both. Thanks Bill. One of the many exciting events our team has been part of this week in New York. Happy #climateweek to all those who celebrate!
Yesterday, we kicked off kyu House by focusing on coalitions, gender equality, the leadership needed to bring about true climate action, and more! 🤝 SYPartners and The Aspen Institute taught us how true collaboration can make all the difference in the climate fight. However, working across organizations requires intention and know-how. “Coalitions have to find the productive space to navigate conflict,” said María Ortiz Pérez (The Aspen Institute). ⚖️ The kyu House Cafe was a full house for IDEO.org’s session. Margaret E. Greene, PhD introduced a gender x climate framework, that IDEO.org co-created with The Chroma Collective, which evaluates projects along an axis of exploitative to transformative and harmful to regenerative. IDEO.org’s Victoria Yan chatted with an expert panel (Teju N. Adisa-Farrar, Phoebe Lane, and Soraya Hassanali) about the opportunities and challenges that arise when considering gender and climate action together. “We need an ecosystem of solutions,” said Adisa-Farrar, of the Black Fiber & Textile Network. 🥂 Opening Night was all about connecting the climate community around some friendly debate. 🗣️ Kite Insights and BSR brought the drama (in the best possible way) with the question: “𝘋𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱?” Debaters Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Genevieve Guenther, PhD, Kirsten Dunlop, Clover Hogan, Gerald Butts, and Aron Cramer battled it out with persuasive arguments before jury members Tim Brown, Azeem Azhar, and Kathy Baughman McLeod. The night’s biggest surprise was when the “against” debaters managed to pull the rapt audience over to their side. 🧠 👬 IDEO brought back a kyu House classic, the “Creative Tensions" exercise. Brown and Bryan Walker led the room in a series of literal floor debates, asking questions like, “Where is greater creative leadership needed? In the realm of policy or desirability? In iconic or systemic innovation? Fear versus hope?” It was a joy to see friends old and new mix, mingle, and swap solutions around climate action in our 395 Hudson Street space. Bring on Day 2 of kyu House! 📸: David Dini #kyuhouse #ClimateWeekNYC #ClimateAction

Wrapping this week reflecting on a transformational trip to build community with cross-sector water leaders at The Aspen Institute Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment Water Forum. The chance to step back and deeply reflect on the linked challenges of #decarbonization and #watersecurity in a place that so vividly reminds me why I do this work - love for people and planet - was a profound privilege and a much-needed opportunity to get centered, grounded, and recharged. Grateful to Martin Doyle and Newsha Ajami, PhD for facilitating productive conversations, Greg Gershuny, Kate Jaffee, Beatrijs Kuijpers and the Aspen team for being such gracious hosts, and event sponsors The Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation, Xylem, Veolia, The Freshwater Trust, Mortenson Center in Global Engineering & Resilience, The Water Research Foundation (WRF), Esri, ByWater Institute at Tulane University,Mighty Arrow Family Foundation, and Raftelis for making it all possible. Most of all, I'm grateful for my tremendously talented and capable team of leaders at Current, who kept us flowing beautifully - even hosting a visit from the White House! - while I focused my attention on the new ideas and relationships that will power our work forward. #teamwork. 📸: Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, White River National Forest
