"Pro bono counsel and those who provide pro bono services…make it possible for people to feel like the playing field is leveled and that they have access to services and the ability to protect themselves," says Susan Brye, Senior Director of Legal Affairs for National Security at T-Mobile. Davis Wright Tremaine LLP is grateful for the opportunity to partner with T-Mobile in meaningfully serving society's most marginalized communities. “Doing good is part of what we do," says Microsoft's Jason Barnwell, GM and AGC - Monetization and Business Planning, and we couldn't agree more. For many companies, giving back isn't just a commitment, it's woven into the fabric of their organizations. Davis Wright Tremaine is honored to collaborate with in-house legal departments like Microsoft to empower them on their mission to help others and, in doing so, fulfill our own "do good" promise. Hear more from Jason as part of our In-House Insights series, where in-house counsel share and reflect on many topics involving pro bono and social impact. Last Saturday, over 60 Davis Wright Tremaine LLP volunteers, alumni, family members, and friends gathered at Green Lake in Seattle to participate in our fourth annual Walk to Defeat ALS. Team DWT walked nearly three miles and raised over $4500 towards research to find a cure for ALS. We were honored to celebrate the life and legacy of beloved Seattle partner, Bruce EH Johnson, at this event, as well as the continuing battles of our former colleagues who are living with ALS.

We are thrilled to announce that Davis Wright Tremaine LLP and Microsoft have been named a The American Lawyer's 2024 Industry Awards finalist in the category of Best Client-Law Firm Team. This honor recognizes DWT and Microsoft's groundbreaking creation of an innovative pro bono program called Protecting Journalists or "ProJourn”, which effectively and uniquely addresses a major gap in legal services by connecting freelance journalists, nonprofit news outlets, and small newsrooms with pro bono attorneys to assist with public records and pre-publication review. ProJourn is now operated by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press thanks to a grant from the Knight Foundation. We are beyond grateful to our partners at Microsoft, including Beth Henderson, Paolo Sy, Adrián Palma, Mohana B., and Sima Sarrafan, and would like to extend our gratitude to the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, particularly Flavie Fuentes, Christina Piaia, and Karla Burgos-Morón, and the Knight Foundation, for their unwavering support, extraordinary leadership, and making this recognition a possibility.

As part of their mission, National Veterans Legal Services Program works to ensure that all veterans and active-duty personnel receive the benefits they are entitled to due to their service to our country. We recently partnered with T-Mobile to support these efforts, as Andrew Lorentz, John Nelson, and Stevin George, alongside their T-Mobile counterpart, Amanda Rosen, represented a veteran seeking a disability pension for two disabilities resulting from his service. The team emerged victorious, significantly increasing their client’s disability compensation and demonstrating the profound positive impact we stand to make through pro bono collaborations with in-house legal departments.

At Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, we are proud to provide wholistic support to in-house teams, including by furthering their “do-good” efforts through the In-House Gateway to Good. The platform makes doing good just a click away, allowing in-house attorneys to make a profound impact in underserved communities worldwide and work on causes they personally care about. “DWT's In-House Gateway to Good helps Uber’s team increase legal pro bono engagement on a global scale,” says Nicole Benincasa and Laura M. Alioto, J.D. of Uber. "We use the platform to find and share a variety of opportunities with volunteers, so that they can engage in pro bono work that is personally meaningful to them and give back to the communities in which Uber operates." Please reach out to Kaitlyn Fallon to learn more about DWT’s In-House Gateway to Good and other pro bono and social impact offerings for in-house teams.
