🇮🇳 ➡ 🇮🇹 Melon picking for a pittance was not the dream that Satnam Singh had in mind when he left his village in northern India for a new life in Italy, working the marshy farmland south of Rome. Back-breaking jobs, measly wages, long hours - and then the fatal mechanical accident that severed his arm and ended his life. Context has traced Singh's steps, explored his motives and asked what might stop other young men risking all for the promise of an uptick in wages and a life of abuse far from home. ✍️ Sandeep Singh and Elena Cavallone report 🔗 https://lnkd.in/emdFkS_E

Bełchatów, a city in Poland, is home to Europe's largest and dirtiest coal-fired power plant. It's a super-polluter responsible for 8.6% of Poland's CO2 emissions, but it's also the economic lifeblood of the region, employing 20,000 people directly and indirectly. Now, under pressure from the EU and environmental groups, the plant is set to close by 2036. This timeline, part of Europe's push to slash greenhouse gas emissions, has left the community wary. "It's suicide," said Krzystof, a miner at Bełchatów. The situation encapsulates broader tensions in Europe's energy transition: How to transition a coal-dependent city to a green economy without leaving its residents behind? 🎙️ Joanna Gill reports. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ejfHkAAe 🏭 This is part of our new series: Super Polluters. Global warming will wipe out small island states unless the COP29 summit allocates significantly more resources for adaptation For these nations, climate justice is not a slogan - it is their only hope of survival. Global leaders must acknowledge that those who have contributed the least to climate change are paying the highest price, and then do something about it. ✍️ Hilda Heine, president of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and Patrick Verkooijen, CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation, write for Context. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gr-ynrba

In Egypt, education officials are watching the U.S. election with concern, worried that if Republican Donald Trump wins he could reduce U.S. financial support for schools catering to students who hope to help lead the energy transition. The former president has pledged to roll back key climate policies implemented by his predecessor, Joe Biden, and 10 international applied technology schools in Egypt could be affected if funds are cut, some experts say. ✍️ Mariam Mokhtar reports. 🔗 https://bit.ly/4hn3Y1L

For over a month, 270 firefighters have been battling fires threatening two Indigenous territories in Brazil's Amazon. The Amazon Fund, supported by European donors and a $500 million U.S. pledge, channels aid to halt deforestation. However, the future of these projects depends on U.S. elections. Trump plans to withdraw from international climate agreements, while Harris supports continued funding. The Amazon Fund's expansion is crucial for climate change mitigation, but its future hinges on political decisions. ✍️ Avi Asher-Schapiro and andré cabette fábio report. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/est4K7hX
