Scaling the Graduation approach through governments to empower 4.6 million households to escape extreme poverty by 2026.
About us
BRAC, the world’s largest NGO, wanted to help previously unreachable people in extreme poverty build sustainable livelihoods long-term. So, in 2002 we pioneered the Graduation approach - a holistic sequence of interventions that empowers people to escape the poverty trap for good. When LSE researchers found 95 percent of participants in Bangladesh continued improving their living standards seven years after the intervention ended, we knew Graduation had the potential to transform lives. Building on that success, BRAC Ultra-Poor Graduation Initiative aims to scale Graduation through governments worldwide to enable 4.6 million more households to escape extreme poverty by 2026, integrating with existing programs and supporting policy change to better meet the needs of people experiencing the most severe poverty.

“The day after the flood hit my area in Moulvibazar, northeastern Bangladesh, I mobilised my team to deliver emergency relief to the people worst affected. We learned that the situation in Rajnagar - a remote area in Moulvibazar - was particularly worse. Roads were inundated, and going there by boat was proving to be quite challenging. No one was being able to reach that area with emergency response. We decided to do it. On our way, there were times when our boat got stuck. We had to get into the water and push it to keep moving. After a strenuous boatride, our teams finally managed to reach the area, and distributed 400 packets of emergency aid - including food, drinking water, oral saline, and sanitary napkins - to communities in five villages in the area. As a human resources manager, my area of work is mainly looking after recruitment, payroll preparation, etc. However, when the crisis unfolded in front of my eyes, I couldn’t sit in the safety of my office and do nothing. I jumped into action to support those who needed it the most.” -AKM Tofail Ahmed, BRAC staff member, Moulvibazar, northeastern Bangladesh. #NotJustAnyJob Stand with us as we stand beside Bangladesh.
