The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 56th chief of engineers, Lt. Gen. William H. Graham, visited the Sarasota, Florida, area to meet with leaders and volunteers involved with USACE's Hurricane Milton response. During his visit, Graham stopped into the USACE Hurricane Milton Emergency Field Office (EFO), to receive briefings and recognize employees who have gone above and beyond in the recovery effort. “It’s an amazing job you’re doing here,” said Graham. “It’s great to see the work that the Jacksonville District, supported by the enterprise across the country, continues to do to get Florida back on its feet.”

The past two weeks have been incredibly rewarding and humbling as I've witnessed the dedication of so many Soldiers, Civilians, and Volunteers who are supporting recovery efforts in Western North Carolina. It was an honor to spend time with TF Castle and the amazing Soldiers from the 20th ENG BDE, 101st ABN DIV, and 82nd ABN DIV - some former students and cadets when I was the Commandant at West Point. Their unwavering commitment brought hope to a place devastated by Hurricane Helene. I also had the privilege to see USACE Civilians work miracles with potable water and uplifted by some incredible volunteers who live by the Golden Rule. The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) has named Dr. Craig Payne Chief of Security. As the chief, Payne is responsible for maintaining and implementing physical security programs, overseeing specialized security functions, operations security, fire protection and prevention, law enforcement and investigations. In his role, he also leads the security guard force across all ERDC locations. Payne brings 30-plus years of leadership and experience to the position. He has led the ERDC Emergency Management Branch in the Installation Operations Command since 2022. Previously, he had led the Security Management Branch in the ERDC Security Office. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Belhaven University and holds a doctorate in organizational leadership from the University of Charleston. Payne joined ERDC in 2019 after 25 years of military service. He retired as Command Sergeant Major of the 112th Military Police Battalion of the Mississippi Army National Guard.
