Initially, Coterie’s data pipelines were set up by two individuals who were also responsible for the data quality and pipeline reliability. In these early stages, the small team was able to manage the pipelines by primarily leveraging the deep knowledge they had gained by building the data pipelines from scratch. As the company grew, however, so did the complexity of its data environment, and Coterie outgrew what could be managed by tribal knowledge alone.

To make the most of growing demand and their underlying technology, Coterie made a complete shift to a new infrastructure built on Databricks. With the new infrastructure and demand for data, the data team also grew from a few data engineers and a database administrator (DBA) to more than 13 with each owning a particular part of the cross-functional data pipeline.

The strength of Coterie’s business depends on the data team’s ability to operationalize data quality and pipeline reliability, but now the team was stretching the limits of what could be done manually. With the data team focused on creating data and data science products to drive the business, it was impossible to have a holistic understanding of the data pipelines and the quality of the data without adding additional resources solely focused on monitoring.

Coterie first implemented Pantomath to help facilitate the move to the new infrastructure, enabling the team to understand exactly what data to migrate and what to leave behind, like unneeded PowerBI reports and duplicate data. Once migrated, Pantomath’s connection to Azure Data Factory, Databricks, and PowerBI provide the team end-to-end observability of data at rest and in motion. With this real-time view of the data health, the data team can address issues before they impact the business.

Coterie leverages Pantomath’s Microsoft Teams integration to coordinate across the data team. With the integration, the team can follow the chain of events that led to a data issue and quickly collaborate on the solution. Leadership can get a clear understanding of the health of the data infrastructure at any time.

In one instance, the leadership encountered a reporting discrepancy. Normally, a data issue would have been the first culprit. But, the data team was able to check Pantomath and verify in real time that the data was not the root of the problem. Without Pantomath, Coterie wouldn’t have been able to have quickly and confidently ruled out data as the source of the issue.
