Beyond the Badge--NASPA in the Emerald City

NASPA in Seattle is just around the corner, and I couldn't be more excited! This annual gathering of student affairs professionals is a highlight of the year for me, offering a chance to learn, connect, and celebrate the incredible work happening across higher education. As I prepare for my time in Seattle, I'm excited for what lies ahead: reconnecting with cherished friends and colleagues, serving as a NASPA-sponsored Executive Coach for VP's of Student Affairs, facilitating a vital discussion on AI for the James E. Scott Academy Board, honoring my friend James Stascavage as he heads into retirement, and reigniting connections with the 2022 and 2024 Aspiring VPSA Institute's participants and faculty.

But with so much to see and do, how do you get the most out of a conference like NASPA? Here's how I'm approaching it to maximize my experience:

Prioritize Your Goals:

This year, my focus is multifaceted. I'm eager to reconnect with cherished friends and colleagues, fostering those invaluable connections that keep our #SAPros community strong. I have the privilege of serving as a NASPA-sponsored Executive Coach for VPSA's, an opportunity I'm incredibly excited about. I'll also be facilitating a discussion about AI for the James E. Scott Academy Board, diving into a topic that's transforming our field. But most importantly, I'm eager to learn from my peers and colleagues.

Plan Your Schedule (but Be Flexible):

With such a vibrant conference program, pre-planning is key. I've reviewed the program and identified sessions in the NASPA app that align with my goals, leaving room for some serendipitous discoveries along the way. Seattle itself is a city brimming with culture and charm, so I've also factored in time to explore the vibrant Pike Place Market, savor a cup of coffee at a local cafe, and to venture out of the conference hotel/spaces for some great meals!

Engage and Network:

NASPA is a fantastic platform to connect with colleagues from across the country. I plan to participate actively in discussions, attend receptions, and leverage social media to connect with fellow attendees. I am most looking forward to catching up with Glass Half Full Consulting clients and the 2022 and 2024 graduates of the NASPA Institute for Aspiring VPSA's.

Celebrate and Recognize:

I'm eager to be in community with my fellow MSU Spartans as we come together to commemorate celebrate the 75th anniverary of our Student Affairs graduate program. It’s a moment of pride and joy as we celebrate not only a significant milestone in our history but also the achievements and contributions of our community within higher education. I am equally excited to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the remarkable folks who have been honored as 2024 "Pillars of the Profession." I also want to congratulate those who are heading into elected leadership roles with the Association like my friends Mike Christakis and Anna Gonzalez.

Take Notes (for Yourself and Others):

With so much information and inspiration flooding in, note-taking is essential. Noting key takeaways, speaker quotes, or session insights will ensure I can revisit valuable content later. Sharing them with colleagues who couldn't attend can also extend the conference's impact. I plan to blog while at the conference and also blog upon my return as I reflect on the experience.

Spotlighting Glass Half Full Consulting on a National Stage:

This conference presents an unparalleled opportunity for us to showcase the diverse array of programs and services that Glass Half Full Consulting offers. Our team is eager to demonstrate how we empower institutions through a comprehensive suite of offerings, including AI training sessions, transformative executive coaching, bespoke leadership and staffing solutions, strategic planning services, and much more. Join us in discovering how our small but formidable team can make a significant impact on your institution.

Reflect and Recharge:

Conferences can be marathons, not sprints. Building in time for reflection and relaxation is crucial. Whether it's taking a walk along the Seattle waterfront or simply noting key takeaways, these moments allow me to process the experience and solidify my learning.

So, here I come, NASPA Seattle! I'm ready to learn, connect, and be inspired in the beautiful Emerald City. Stay tuned for future posts where I'll share insights, highlights, and reflections from the conference.
