SAN FRANCISCO — Macy’s is expected to sell and close its Union Square location, according to San Francisco Mayor London Breed.

Breed announced the news in a statement Tuesday following the development that the department store plans to shutter 150 of its underperforming locations — 50 in 2024 and another 100 in the next few years — amid slipping sales.

The Union Square store will not be part of the first wave of closures and will stay open for the foreseeable future, according to Breed.

“The City will continue to work closely with Macy’s and any potential new owner to ensure this iconic location continues to serve San Francisco for decades to come,” Breed said in the statement, adding San Francisco may use tools such as zoning and tax revenue to help keep the site successful.

“That being said, as someone who grew up in San Francisco, Macy’s has always meant a lot to the people of this city. It’s where families came to shop for the holidays. It’s where many people from my community got their first jobs, or even held jobs for decades. It’s hard to think of Macy’s not being part of our city anymore.”
