On behalf of the Mayor’s Task Force on Healthcare, we wish to extend our heartfelt appreciation to all involved in the process of defining the healthcare needs of our community.

Identifying these needs resulted from a series of townhall meetings, along with open discussions with residents who voiced the need for improved healthcare services for all. These discussions and persistent community advocacy have led to the recent announcement by Sen. John Hoeven of a letter of intent for the acquisition of CHI St. Alexius Hospital in Devils Lake by Altru Health System .

Hoeven’s unwavering support, effort and advocacy has been instrumental in making the potential for a long envisioned unified healthcare system for the greater Lake Region a reality. His leadership has provided the confidence that the greater Lake Region will receive the necessary healthcare services it deserves and can support. His commitment and determination have been pivotal in driving our efforts to this stage.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Tim Bricker of CHI/CommonSpirit, and Todd Forkel and Dr. Josh Deere of Altru Health System. Their leadership, expertise and dedication have been crucial in navigating the complexities of healthcare reform and bringing the real potential of a unified healthcare system that will benefit our community for years to come.

We also want to extend our thanks to Sen. Kevin Cramer for his early assistance in this initiative. Cramer’s efforts helped lay the foundation for a unified healthcare system by bringing together key stakeholders and resources. His dedication in the early stages was instrumental in setting the project on a path to success.

In addition, we want to thank the Spirit Lake Nation. Their collaboration and support have been invaluable.

In all, the establishment of a unified healthcare system in the greater Lake Region would be a transformative step and provide numerous benefits to all residents. This system would streamline and integrate healthcare services, making them more accessible and efficient. The consolidation of resources and expertise will provide higher quality care, reduce wait times, and ensure that all residents receive the medical attention they need promptly.

The collaboration and dedication demonstrated by community members, healthcare leaders, Hoeven, and Cramer exemplify the spirit of unity and progress throughout the greater Lake Region. We are on the brink of achieving a significant milestone in improving healthcare access and quality for our residents.
