Your mindset has the biggest influence on your success

Your mindset has the biggest influence on your success

For many people, this is the time of year for reflecting on how successful the year has been and how perhaps to make next year more successful. There are obviously factors outside of our control which will influence our levels of success but the biggest influence is something that is within our control - and that is our way of thinking i.e. our mindset.

Much has been written about the 'growth mindset' and this is one of the things that separates an entrepreneur from a common or garden business owner (who will typically display a more risk adverse 'fixed mindset'). Another thing that is commonly associated with someone who has a more fixed mindset is something called 'prevention focus'.

So - what is prevention focus? When someone has prevention focus, they think more about what they might lose rather than what they might gain - when considering their goals. They want to stay safe, avoid mistakes and hang on to what they’ve already got. They may even overlook a chance for more happiness and success because they don't want to take a risk. If this is you then chances are that you are thinking only in terms of prevention.

The opposite to prevention focus is something called promotion focus. Promotion focus is about getting ahead, maximising your potential, seeing the gains and reaping the rewards. It’s about never missing an opportunity to better yourself, even when doing so means taking a leap of faith.

This way of thinking is associated more with a growth mindset and the good news is that if you want to change your current fixed thinking to a more growth orientated mindset - then you can but you will need some well-proven strategies and techniques.

If you are serious about changing your thinking and making next year a more successful year - then why not check out my collaborative 'Master The Science of Success' one day bootcamp on the 3rd March 2022 at the Civic Centre in Chelmsford.

My co-host, coach and trainer for the day will be Prof. Mike Ferguson (business psychologist and master coach) and all attendees get their own unique hybrid success blueprint - which combines both traditional and fringe science based teachings.
