Why we need Trans Awareness Week

Next week (13 - 19 November) will mark Trans Awareness Week, which aims to highlight the progress and the unfinished work in the continuing fight for trans and non-binary equality and inclusion both within the workplace and in wider society.

The week culminates with Transgender Day of Remembrance on Saturday, 20 November with the purpose of remembering everyone in the trans community that has fallen victim to violence.

The UK was recently ranked as one of the worst places in Europe and Central Asia to be trans. The low score comes shortly after anti-trans comments at this year’s Conservative Party conference. Prime minister Rishi Sunak said: “A man is a man, and a woman is a woman, that’s just common sense”, while health secretary Steve Barclay proposed banning transgender women from female hospital wards, despite a study last year revealing that there had not been a single complaint about the issue.

As the vitriol from politicians and legacy media outlets continues, it's never been more important to recognise the reason why we need Trans Awareness Week.

Our friends at Trans in the City will be hosting a series of events during the week and we're thrilled to share details in this week's newsletter. The non-profit group led entirely by trans and non-binary people collaborate with over 300 global corporate partners to raise awareness, share contacts and best practice, provide role models and speakers and access to consultancy and training.

Speaking to PinkNews about the importance of Trans Awareness Week, Nicki Lambert, business manager at Trans in the City says: "It's important to bring light, joy and celebration to the trans and non-binary communities and have the opportunity to recognise the successes and value of trans and non-binary people in businesses and charities.

"We want to inspire people, give them the opportunity to collaborate and share their experiences and raise awareness for the community."

The hospital wards thing makes no bloody sense to me. When there's overspill, men go into women's wards. When I was in an acute mental health ward, it was a mixed unit. So why kick off about Trans women who are, women? It's just another way to exclude these people!
