Why is having access to Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) important to me?

My colleague asked me to record a quick 60-second video where I explain, why ERG groups at the workplace are important. I was very excited about this and started to write my mini script. However, I underestimated how short 60 seconds actually is.. After 100+ takes, I realised, I wouldn't be able to fit my 244-word script in 60 seconds (I admit, I was too ambitious). For the video, I shortened my script so I could speak normal speed, still make my point and fit in the 60 seconds.

I always say to my customers re-use your content, if you make a video, make an e-book of the script and repost it on social media. Well.. the script of my pre-shortened video isn't an e-book or downloadable. However, I would like to use the LinkedIn platform to share my opinion and explain why I think ERGs are important.

I think it’s important to have different ERG groups at your workplace so your employees can identify themself and have a safe place to go to.

For example, people who identify themselves as LGBT may have particular struggles that other people won’t understand so having groups like LGBT@hubspot is very meaningful. It’s important for them to have a place where they can go to, where they can feel heard and where they can feel safe.

One of my favourite quotes from the writer Shonda Rhimes is: “Your tribe is waiting for you. You are not alone.” And I think that sums up the importance of ERG groups. Everyone should be able to connect with someone who looks like them, whom they can relate to or whom they can go to.

I’m part of two ERG’s in HubSpot, but I’m particularly grateful for the Black@Hubspot ERG. This group became a safe place at work when news of George Floyd’s death rocked the black community and fired up the #BLM movement in Ireland and across the globe. Without needing to explain my grief or anger and be unapologetic, it became a safe haven for expression.

Being able to integrate with a group of people whom I can identify myself with, who understand me, and whom I can go to in troubled times is truly a blessing.

Well said! It is so great to see that all these ERGs offer "a safe place to go to". Your work is much appreciated :)
