A Wall of Change #cityoflondonschool

As winter turns into spring, I celebrate the changing of another season. My family and I were invited guests to a bursary sponsor event at City of London School yesterday evening. This is my son's Alma mater, he would have been a 2004 graduate.

I want to recognise the work of the current Head Master, who has been building a culture of diversity and inclusion to ensure equitable access to education for boys from every background, class and ethnicity. This has been enabled by learning lessons from the past, having skilled and passionate teachers and leaders and facilitated by the bursary scheme.

We were given a private tour of the excellent school facilities by the Head Boy. There were inspiring speeches by two current students, recipients of the bursary, who spoke of the changes in the trajectories of their lives. They spoke with passion about education being the platform to enable them to realise their dreams. I was an excited STEM advocate as I witnessed the unveiling of future leaders in STEM, including a Physicist and a Computer Scientist.

I was also a proud mother as I walked along the school corridor and saw the wall of fame of portraits of past pupils, spanning a diversity of professions, backgrounds and ethnicity. The wall of past pupils has been established to provide role models for current and future students to encourage them in what they can achieve and strive to be all they can be.

I truly believe that a great education with a breadth of extracurricular activities levels the playing field in life and provides a platform that leads to possibilities. This should be a given for every child in the UK, leading to a brighter future for us all.
