U.S. Memorial Day Honor: Aon Colleagues Plant Flags

For the second year in a row, members of the Aon Veterans United (AVU) business resource group at Aon planted U.S. flags at veterans’ graves across the country. The flag planting occurred May 21 in honor of Memorial Day 2022.

While many mark Memorial Day as the unofficial start of the summer season and celebrate with barbecues and parties, the AVU group notes that it is a solemn occasion. Please join AVU as we observe Memorial Day on Monday, May 30, and commemorate those who gave their lives for our nation.

History and Legacy of Memorial Day

With the end of the Civil War, Americans began holding observances to commemorate those who died serving their country – on both sides of the war. They decorated graves with flowers, and the occasion become known as Decoration Day.

After several years, May 30 was observed as the national holiday. After World War I, the name was changed to Memorial Day; and in 1971, the observance was officially moved to the last Monday in May.

Commemorations include laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery and events across the nation, such as parades and special services held by veteran-focused organizations.
