Singapore's biggest oil spill in over a decade
It has been a week since a dredging boat hit a stationary bunker vessel at the Pasir Panjang Terminal, leading to 400 tonnes of fuel being leaked into the sea. The spill then spread to Sentosa, the Southern Islands and East Coast Park beaches. While the beaches in the southern waters and East Coast Park have been mostly cleared of oil, the authorities have said the cleanup will “take some time”.
Fortunately, there have been no significant wildlife casualties observed so far. That said, it appears that it will likewise be a while before the full extent of the oil spill’s impact on the environment will be known. The June 14 incident is the largest oil spill Singapore has experienced in over a decade. Here’s a look at how Singapore has responded to it.
