Quit Running from Your Dreams – Do This Instead: 8 Rules to Get Sh*t Done!

One of my favorite quotes is "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step," by Lao Tzu, the ancient Chinese philosopher and writer. His quote accurately echoes the point that achieving any goal starts by taking the first step forward. Though inertia and uncertainty may hold us back initially, consistent small actions can compound over time into remarkable progress.

James Clear touched on this theme a bit in a recent LinkedIn post that went viral where he wrote - "Finish something. Anything. Stop researching, planning, and preparing to do the work and just do the work. It doesn’t matter how good or how bad it is. You don’t need to set the world on fire with your first try. You just need to prove to yourself that you have what it takes to produce something. There are no artists, athletes, entrepreneurs, or scientists who became great by half-finishing their work. Stop debating what you should make and just make something."

Both quotes set the stage for this week’s article where we touch on 8 principles that you can use to overcome the inertia of getting started.

So, here we go! Let's explore eight principles (Unself-help advice) that will help you overcome inertia and fuel your personal growth today – Let’s dive in:

  1. Embrace Imperfection - The first step is not about perfection; it's about progress. Give yourself permission to create imperfect work. Remember, every masterpiece starts as a draft. The key is to begin. 80% executed is better than 100% perfect unexecuted.

  2. Set Small, Achievable Goals - Break down your larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks. As with Lao Tzu’s thousand miles quote, focus on taking that first step, however small it may seem.

  3. Prioritize Action Over Planning - While planning is important, it should not become a form of procrastination. Set a limit on your planning phase and shift your focus to action. Real learning and growth happen in “real” doing.

  4. Celebrate Small Wins - Recognize and celebrate your small victories. These milestones are significant motivators and reminders of your progress, no matter how insignificant they may seem.

  5. Learn from Failure, Don’t Fear It - View failures as feedback, not setbacks. Each failure teaches you something valuable that you can use to improve your next attempt.

  6. Focus On the Process, Not the Product - Rome wasn't built in a day. By diligently laying one brick after another, the mighty city of Rome arose (Without machinery). Likewise, incrementally move the needle through daily actions. Master the process and the product will follow.

  7. Stay Consistent Over Time - The compound effect guarantees that small steps completed consistently over time yield massive results. Skip "get results quick" schemes. Commit to lifelong consistency.

  8. Reflect and Recharge Daily - Each evening, reflect on what went well and areas for improvement. Then recharge for the next day's progress. Wake ready to incrementally build again. You can do this!

Weekly Growth Tip: Today's Action for Tomorrow's Achievement - Identify one small task related to your goal that you've been postponing. Commit to completing it today. Remember, tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week. Take that first step now and set the tone for a productive tomorrow. Enjoy the journey and keep climbing!!

Excellent article and quote, Kevin Box🚀. Starting with that first step, no matter how small is the key to turning dreams into reality. It's all about taking action and breaking through inertia, which can often be the biggest obstacle.

Sigma Rule; Take action every day. Even the smallest step forward is better than no action at all.
