Planning Underway for Kiewa Valley BESS
Ovens Murray’s renewable energy zone continues to gain momentum with the planning lodgement for a new battery storage project in Dederang. This application represents a significant step in the ongoing efforts to enhance the region and create new opportunities for the local community.
Trinasolar International System Business Unit’s (‘ISBU’) Australia Team is currently in the investigation stages of developing and operating a 500MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Kiewa Valley, Victoria. The project site is approximately 3 km northeast of Dederang on Yackandandah-Dederang Road. This initiative aims to strengthen the national electrical grid during peak demand and emergencies.
A community information session was held in May, and since then, there have been multiple ongoing contacts with the community. Detailed site assessments and designs have also been finalized, and the planning application to the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) has been completed.
“We are very excited about the ongoing progress and support for this project,” said Jose Flores, Trinasolar ISBU’s Australia Team’s Head of Development, “The project is well-advanced in discussions with AEMO and AusNet regarding connecting to the grid.”
Community Impact and Consultation
As part of the development process, the community will be able to review the application and provide feedback. A consultation period is expected to begin shortly, giving residents and stakeholders a chance to voice their opinions and concerns.
According to Olivia He, Trinasolar ISBU’s Senior Project Development Officer, “We are committed to ensuring that this project not only meets the highest standards of design and sustainability but also aligns with the needs and values of the local community.”
To support the surrounding areas, Trinasolar ISBU Australia Team has proposed establishing a Community Benefit Fund (CBF) to support the surrounding areas. This fund will provide an annual endowment, implemented in coordination with the Alpine Shire Council to address the specific needs and priorities of the local community.
Next Steps
The application will now undergo review by the Department of Transport and Planning, with a decision expected by early 2025. Updates and additional information will be available via our website (https://kiewavalleybess.com.au) and public announcements.
Community members interested in learning more about the project or providing feedback can visit our website: https://kiewavalleybess.com.au or attend public meetings, which will be organized in the coming weeks. Public input will be an essential part of the review process.
