Nature's Healing Power

Nature's Healing Power

THE THERAPEUTIC ROLE OF NATURE

Nature plays a significant role in psychology. It has been linked to reducing stress, anxiety, rumination, low moods, and mental fatigue. Nature hence improves moods, relaxation and enhances cognitive functions.

Nature comprises green spaces such as trees, forests, grass fields, fresh air, the sky, water catchment areas, and even being away from urbanized spaces.

To achieve a better therapeutic role, nature can be combined with hobbies, or recreational activities. To relax, different techniques would be very appropriate to incorporate nature. This can include

1.      A mindful walk.

A mindful walk is when one uses the five senses to experience nature in the present moment. One can walk around mentioning, identifying, and thinking about what they can see, feel on their skin, hear, smell, or taste.  This is a calming technique that reduces anxiety and rumination.

2.      Safe space.

A safe space is when a person imagines a place where no one can harm or hurt them. One can think of a space that is in nature, like the ocean or a green field or a forest, that helps them to relax and be calm.

Nature can also be used as a natural antidepressant. This means that one can use the experience in nature to help improve mood or alleviate some depression symptoms. Recreational activities in nature can include

  •  Jogging

  • Planting

  • Touring

  • Game drives

  • Road trips

  • Swimming

Such activities help in the production of feel-good hormones the endorphins. These hormones help in pain relief, stress reduction, and production of dopamine which is crucial as it’s an essential neurotransmitter that increases release and helps to improve mood.

In essence, nature serves as a valuable resource for promoting holistic health and well-being. By incorporating nature into our daily lives, we can experience the numerous benefits it offers for our physical, mental, and emotional health.
