Mid-year2023... A Reflection

In the blink of an eye, the first half of 2023 has swept by, leaving behind a trail of indelible lessons and experiences. It has been a year of trials, turbulence, and transformation; where unexpected events, rather than quiet stability, have set the stage.

The year kicked off in the shadow of global layoffs, economic uncertainties, and relentless inflation. Interest rates ascended, and the cost of living followed suit. As wallets grew thinner and worries thicker, every homeowner tensed up with each percentage hike, caught between basic survival and maintaining the roof over their heads.

Yet, amidst this challenging backdrop, an incongruous spectacle unfolded – the top-tier banks reported record profits. The dichotomy was startling and prompted an internal wrestling match, raising the question of ethical leadership. How do these institutions, integral to the societal fabric, justify towering profits when families grapple with existential decisions like whether their children can continue extramural soccer practice or have a decent meal?

These circumstances served as a jarring reminder of the responsibilities we bear as societal participants and leaders, particularly the need for empathy and leading with Emotional Intelligence. As each of us manoeuvres the chessboard of life, our decisions and actions ripple out, influencing those around us.

Six months into the storm, I find myself in the eye, reflecting on my journey amidst the chaos. In the backdrop of crisis, I sought solace in the rich tapestry of experiences woven through interactions with diverse individuals. Every conversation, every conflict, and every moment of collaboration unveiled new perspectives and knowledge that enriched me. - A HUGE shout-out to my fellow mates from AGSM@UNSW.

Leadership styles, team dynamics, and feedback mechanisms – concepts I thought I knew - took on new meaning and provoked internal conflict and curiosity. But with this inner turbulence came illumination. Constructive feedback emerged as a beacon of guidance, facilitating refinement of strategies and interpersonal skills. Recognising the gaps between lived experiences and preconceived understandings led to profound learning.

The real magic unfolded when these insights translated into action. As we traversed and executed new strategies, the collective energy of the team surged. Our unity manifested in the quality of our output, signalling a triumph of collaboration over adversity.

Amidst the tumult, emotional intelligence emerged as a cornerstone. Recognising and understanding emotional awareness, assisted me to forge deeper connections with my peers. My commitment to empathetic leadership and motivation was rejuvenated, fortifying the collective resilience of the team.

A poignant lesson was the privilege to delve into the rich history and wisdom of Indigenous Australians. Their profound connection to the land, community, and heritage illuminated a fresh perspective on leadership, underscoring the importance of inclusivity, diversity, and cultural sensitivity.

The first half of 2023 has been a rigorous test of resilience and adaptability. Yet, these adversities have fashioned an arena for learning, growth, and self-improvement. As I look forward to the latter half of the year, I remain committed to turning trials into transformation and turmoil into triumph. After all, it's not just about weathering the storm, but learning to dance in the rain.
