Life after Coronavirus!

Life after Coronavirus!

I believe that our world will not be the same again. Our everyday life has been impacted in ways we never imagined before! I am an optimist and do not claim to be an expert in predicting our future. But based on my tech background in healthcare and experience of working in different geographies with a diverse set of people, there are three things I want to talk about:

  • Technology will come to the rescue: Can you imagine the even wider impact of coronavirus if the technology was not advanced enough to: 1. Enable remote work 2. Deliver essential items to your doorstep? Is that feeling of gratitude sinking in? We are thankful for the numerous video conferencing platforms that are enabling us to keep in touch with our family and friends. More people are learning to use newer tech tools than ever before. Necessity is the mother of invention! Creative thinking and innovations in technology would make healthcare more accessible in the future - think of all the companies and people that are providing their infrastructure and services to mass-produce face masks and ventilators. I foresee advances in telemedicine and self-diagnosis kits that would make our life simpler. The idea of drones delivering hands-free items to our houses may be realized sooner than expected. Just look around and notice how many people and organizations are creatively using technology to run their daily lives (e.g. The Tonight Show: At Home Edition by Jimmy Fallon). I hope to see many more technological innovations that will make our world safer and better!
  • We will be going back to basics: We are going to be more focused on basic needs such as food and health. The current situation has also taken a heavy toll on our minds. Managing mental health will be more important than ever (We can expect more job opportunities in this field). Providing good nutrition to our mind and body will be necessary in order to boost our immune system. We also see an increased focus on general hygiene that not only helps in the current crisis but would also help in restricting the spread of other common illnesses such as the flu. I am hoping to see entrepreneurs and organizations bringing creative solutions that solve the problems we face today. I foresee restructuring in the job market to align with this shift to the basics. We are already seeing new hiring trends where some companies(Amazon, Walmart, CVS, etc.) are posting new jobs while many others are unfortunately laying people off.
  • We will not be taking things for granted: The current crisis has reset our priorities! We will no longer take health and safety for granted regardless of whether we are in a developing or a developed country. Even when this crisis is over, I see more people (and enterprises) shifting to a work-from-home model in order to spend more time with their families. We never know when and how frequently we will come across such infectious diseases. The importance of ordinary outside tasks, which we are not able to do currently, is so palpable right now! We have a renewed respect for people who are enabling essential services for us, for example, healthcare workers, delivery drivers, cashiers, janitors, etc. and I am sure this appreciation will continue to grow. We have learned it the hard way that we were not prepared enough this time and we need to do a better job for a healthier and safer world!
“The greatest glory in living lies not in never failing, but in rising every time we fail.”
~ Nelson Mandela

Let's work on creating a better future. Together, we can overcome this crisis!
