Impact of Covid-19 on Recruitment

Rolling in uninvited, Covid-19 chaotically swept in disrupting the lives of many. From quick paced mornings, scurrying to get your daily dose of caffeine; many are now sitting at home in their PJs facing their laptops. These are the fortunate employees who are able to continue making a living out of the comfort of their own homes, while others are faced with the wrath of unemployment. Clearly, the labor industry is vastly affected by this pandemic leaving job seekers, recruiters and entire organizations alike in a difficult position.

Despite the unexpected turn of events in 2020, the labor market may seem to have halted their operations, but it is crucial to understand that many companies are struggling to survive and retain their current employees; And frankly, recruiting is not their main priority. As for organizations that specialize in recruitment, new and different techniques ought to be developed since the pandemic has resulted in a systematic shift in the way companies operate. These changes will remain even after the pandemic subsides culminating in a new, and hopefully improved way of hiring and recruitment where the needs of both employers and employees are met.

Stability and safety are a top priority for employees and job seekers alike. The pandemic has highlighted just how drastically our lives can change in a heartbeat. Therefore, companies must now focus on the employee’s needs more than ever. The CMO of Jobvite, a recruitment software company, has stressed that over 80% of job seekers nowadays are highly influenced by company culture, values and compensation plan when accepting job offers rather than salary. Moreover, a well reputed company with a good company culture, where the employees' voices are heard will attract stronger and more talented applicants; increasing the company’s success and stability. The human element and the ability to set the stage for strong trustworthy relationships between the employee and employer is what recruitment is all about.

Transparency and effective communication is key when securing talented employees. Previously, recruitment was merely transactional; an opening pops up and the seat is quickly filled. But now, companies must hire wisely, the luxury of hiring just anyone is no longer an option. Their need for top talent has become apparent during the pandemic as some employees were unable to cope under pressure. These pressures were a result of greater workload from understaffed companies increasing frustration and employee turnover. As a result, companies need to thoughtfully engage their employees and start prioritizing their needs to prevent frustration.

Although the recruitment process may now be lengthier, it will increase the company’s culture and values in the long run. Honesty and sincerity from both the employers and employees will essentially increase stability in the workplace; which is a fundamental factor for both parties alike when embarking job opportunities.
