How to prevent slow death at work?
I make people jump like a kangaroo, roar like a tiger and walk like an elephant. And I don’t work at the zoo. I teach busy people YogaLight in their offices.
The concept was born when I was pursuing my corporate HR career often finding myself chained to the desk most of the days. I could not grasp the idea of why I was spending so many hours and years sitting at my desk, at the meetings, in the car or on the plane.
Our bodies are made to move, every inch of them. Inside us are over 360 joints and about 700 skeletal muscles that enable easy and fluid motion. Our blood circulation depends on us moving to be able to circulate properly. Our nerve cells greatly benefit from movements too. And we do not utilise this nature given physical benefits because of the way we designed our working lives to be spent in one or two positions. And scientists insist that these positions are killing us.
What can we do to prevent our slow death at work?
Progressive organisations purchase stand up desks, ball chairs, offer pedometers and encourage walk and talk meetings.
What did we do? We created YogaLight.
YogaLight is a corporate and fun version of the ancient yoga practice that teaches gentle stretches and breathing techniques anyone can perform whist at work. It educates how simple changes to the body can alter our mental alertness and energy levels. It is an engaging, energising and educational session anyone can do. YogaLight makes us think as well.
The scientists have proved that our body and mind have a strong connection with the dual feedback system. They both continuously share emotional information with each other. In fact, much of what the body feels is coloured by our thoughts and emotions, and everything that we think is informed by what’s going on in the body. It’s a phenomenally complex process full of feedbacks, but research is showing us that our whole outlook on life and work can be shifted by tiny changes in the body. And YogaLight is there to show how!
So how do we do it?
We come to your workplace/office/meeting/conference and run YogaLight sessions from 30 min to an hour. We can accommodate all group sizes.
We explore the importance of correct posture, practice powerful breathing techniques than can be employed anywhere, engage in simple flowing movements and stretches that improve blood circulation, reset nervous system, prevent musculoskeletal injuries, relieve neck and shoulder tension and uplift the mood. And of course we do some fun stuff too.
It makes everyone think how powerful and simple yoga practice can be and how many benefits it can bring to our daily working lives whether you are working at a desk, at distribution or manufacturing site or behind the wheel. Every workshop is different and focused on different benefits including business benefits.
It is a culture changing activity.
Our vision is for everyone to start their office day, their meetings and finish their afternoons with YogaLight. Also we are working on launching an on-line video tutorial so the lessons are easily accessible to anyone.
And of course our Brain Yoga complements our YogaLight sessions.
