Honoring Those Who Served During Military Appreciation Month & Memorial Day

As May unfolds, Renewal by Andersen proudly celebrates Military Appreciation Month, which aims to honor current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces. This month-long observance leads to the solemn commemoration of Memorial Day, a day of national remembrance for those who have bravely laid down their lives in service to our nation. Throughout May, we not only recognize the courage and dedication of our active and retired military men and women but also honor the ultimate sacrifice made by fallen heroes. Renewal by Andersen’s commitment to our service members is deeply ingrained in our community giving initiatives during this poignant month, reflecting our ongoing dedication to those who have served and sacrificed for our country.

Transforming Living Spaces and Lives

Renewal by Andersen has made meaningful contributions to veteran welfare through supporting various initiatives aimed at combating veteran homelessness and improving living conditions. A notable project includes our collaboration with the MACV Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV), where we donated thirty-six windows to a new transitional housing complex in St. Paul, Minnesota. Through our partnership with MACV, we not only improve their living spaces, but also enhance their quality of life and give them a sense of comfort and security. This gesture goes beyond mere renovation; it symbolizes hope and transformation, offering a long-term solution for veterans in need.

Employees Get Involved Across the Country

The strong sense of community involvement displayed by Renewal by Andersen is clear through the various local initiatives led by our teams across the nation. Renewal by Andersen Greater Maine's "Tickets for Heroes" initiative brought a celebration of live music and delicious eats to the doorstep of the Maine Veteran's Home, creating an unforgettable experience for its residents. The Renewal by Andersen Central VA team donated office supplies to Tech for Troops, aiding veterans as they transition back to civilian life. In Georgia, the Renewal by Andersen Metro & Midwest team kicked off Military Appreciation Month by partnering with A Safe Place To Lay, focusing on establishing safe and comfortable housing for unhoused veterans. This initiative demonstrates how collaboration and interconnectedness can have a positive influence on our communities.

Supporting Our Heroes

Beyond these giving efforts, Renewal by Andersen also shows its commitment to the veteran community through employment opportunities. The company actively seeks to hire veterans, recognizing the valuable skills and perspectives they bring to the workforce. Additionally, Renewal by Andersen offers a military discount, further acknowledging the sacrifices made by service members and their families.

Ways to Observe

Aside from the National Moment of Remembrance, what are some other ways to pay respect to the men and women who have given their lives in service to our country?

One way is by teaching the next generation what Memorial Day stands for — share with them the history of the day and explain why we can enjoy so many of the wonderful things we're able to do because of those who sacrificed. It’s a serious message — but one that can be shared easily. Set up a vehicle parade, visit a military cemetery, write letters or send a card or picture to service members and women overseas.

Another way to honor the memory of fallen soldiers is to take care of veterans who remain behind. Consider a contribution or a donation of your time to one of the many wonderful nonprofits that support veterans and their families. Patronize businesses that make it a priority to hire vets. Ask your local VA if you can send snacks, or games, or books, or other activities.

Finally, the Memorial Day Foundation offers the following suggestions for gestures of respect:

  • Visit cemeteries and place flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes.

  • Fly the U.S. Flag at half-staff until noon. Memorial Day is a day of "National Mourning."

  • Visit memorials.
