Head in the clouds

Head in the clouds

Having your head in the clouds is not usually a quality you would associate with a competent accountant. However, when it comes to accounting software, we are not ashamed to live in the clouds.

Cloud-based accounting software stores information online rather than on one computer. This helps you:

• see all your financial data from any device with internet access even while on holiday

• automate routine tasks such as RTI payroll, invoicing, banking and credit control

• share information with your accountant securely

• work on your books at the same time as your accountant without duplication and corruption

• avoid the need to backup and send data to your accountant via email or snail mail

• save time and money installing, updating and maintaining computers and programs.

Choosing online accounting software

There is a range of online bookkeeping solutions available with Xero and QuickBooks Online being the most well-known.

Choosing the right software can seem daunting, especially if you lack accounting experience. However, it’s important to remember that these systems are designed for businesses and individuals, not just accountants.

Here are some tips to help you make the right decision:

• research - take advantage of free trials to get a feel for each product

• one size does not fit all - think about the features, flexibility, level of complexity you need today but be aware of your potential future needs too.

• maintenance - consider the level of customer support and updates.
