Feeling blue? It's hurting the economy

Around the world, about 20% of workers feel lonely, angry, or sad on a daily basis, according to a new Gallup survey.

That's concerning for a lot of reasons, but if you're the type to have a Gordon Gekko poster on your wall, you'll probably care the most about this one: Unhappy employees hurt the bottom line.

Gallup says negative emotions and lack of well-being can drag down worker engagement and productivity in a pretty significant way, with unhappy workers costing the global economy up to $8.9 trillion, or 9% of global GDP.

Employers aren't always to blame for their employees' blues, but they can certainly take steps to help, and no we don't mean tripling the pizza party budget (though that probably wouldn't hurt). 🍕

🤝 Putin in Pyongyang: Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have signed a "comprehensive strategic partnership" during the Russian president's rare visit to Pyongyang. Putin touts the "breakthrough" treaty, which he says takes countries' relationship to a "new level" and includes a mutual defense provision in the event one of them is attacked. Full story

⚾ ICYMI: Baseball icon Willie Mays has died at age 93. Nicknamed the "Say Hey Kid," Mays played 23 MLB seasons, mostly with the New York Giants and then the San Francisco Giants after the team switched coasts. Mays notched two league MVP awards and 12 Gold Gloves. All 30 MLB teams are honoring Mays with a moment of silence today, and the Giants have added a "Mays 24" patch to their jerseys "in honor of Willie," the team says. Full story
