European elections special: Lead candidates debate
With less than a month to go until the European elections, find out more about the lead candidates for the presidency of the European Commission by watching the Eurovision debate on Thursday 23 May.
The debate is organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and hosted by the European Parliament.
Since 2014, political parties have put forward their lead candidates for the presidency of the European Commission ahead of the European elections.
This is something the European Parliament had been advocating to be put in place for a long time. You can read more about the process here.
Who is taking part in the debate on 23 May?
The EBU invited the political parties represented in the European Parliament by the political groups to nominate one candidate for the Commission President post to take part in the debate.
The candidates who have confirmed their participation in the debate are:
Walter Baier (European Left)
Sandro Gozi (Renew Europe Now)
Ursula von der Leyen (European People’s Party)
Terry Reintke (European Greens)
Nicholas Schmit (Party of European Socialists)
How to follow and take part in the debate on 23 May
On Thursday, the debate can be followed live at 15.00 CET on:
The candidates will speak in English, with interpretation provided in all 24 official EU languages.
The five candidates will debate several key topics, with questions from the audience in the plenary chamber, from viewers watching from events organised by Parliament’s Liaison Offices in EU member states, others submitted via social media, and by the two moderators.
You can follow and discuss the debate on social media using the hashtag #EurovisionDebate. To discuss the European elections in general, you can use the hashtags #UseYourVote and #EUelections2024.

European elections campaign - get involved!
To inform EU citizens and encourage them to vote, the European Parliament has launched the 4-minute documentary "Use your vote" featuring testimonies of senior citizens from different EU countries. They pass on their stories about the value of democracy to the next generations and underline that our democratic rights cannot be taken for granted. The video in its different formats for social media and TV has already been seen more than 190 million times.

Europe Day marked one month to go until the European elections
