Embracing Equity by Creating a Better Work Environment

Embracing equity in the workplace has always been a priority for me, and I do that first and foremost by advocating for change and making the workplace a more welcoming and trusting environment. As a Latina working in tech, I understand firsthand the challenges that women can face in the workplace, particularly women of color. In order for women to flourish and thrive, we need to build trusting and authentic relationships between leaders, management, and teams.

When I became one of the co-leaders of the First-Generation Professionals Employee Resource Group in 2020, one of my goals was to build a network of support for first generation immigrants and allies. I’ve found that leaders set the tone for the culture and establish norms of behavior, and I felt that by creating a safe space and encouraging ERG members to support each other and be more open, we could create a better work environment.

Three years later, I am blown away by the results of this effort. We have collectively created a safe space where people can share their experiences and challenges, and offer each other advice and support. I’m so happy to see that while the network has been a fantastic tool for members of the ERG, it has become a powerful tool for all women at SpotHero. After all, leaders set the tone. Employees across the company are encouraged to connect more, we are more welcoming, more transparent with one another, and we have built a strong sense of community within our organization. Best of all, because of this, the work we do is better. By building each other up, encouraging openness and advocacy, SpotHero has become a better environment for everyone working here.

To anyone who is looking for ways to embrace equity, I highly encourage them to get to work creating a culture of respect and understanding, where people feel valued and supported, regardless of their background or identity. It’s been so empowering to watch SpotHero evolve and become a more open workplace, where everyone feels that they can bring their authentic selves every day.
