Celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth

Celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth

This #BlackHistoryMonth, we recognize the profound impact of Black individuals in the arts—an influential force driving activism and political change. From music to storytelling to visual arts, Black creators utilize their voices to demand justice and visibility. As systems of inequity persist, including the inequitable distribution of wealth and opportunity that puts African Americans at greater risk of #homelessness, we encourage our community to join us in supporting Black art and elevating these narratives.

Celebrate Black Authors & Combat Erasure

Black writing in the United States has faced censorship for centuries. A renewed campaign now threatens to remove Black-authored books from schools and our shared history.

The Blacklisted Book Fair & Conference, hosted by NBAF, offers an interactive experience with a Black Book Market, children’s activities, book signings, and more. Scheduled for February 24th and 25th at the Loudermilk Conference Center, the event is free.

Learn About Atlanta’s Hip-Hop History

Atlanta may not be the birthplace of hip-hop, but it has become the cultural epicenter of the movement. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s first feature-length documentary, The South Got Something to Say, explores the history of hip-hop through the lens of Atlanta’s social, economic and political influence. You can stream it for free (contains adult images, themes, and language).

Bring the Family for Fun Learning Experiences

Each weekend in February, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights will offer family-friendly games and activities related to Black history, activism, art, and science! Additional scheduled programming includes musical performances, film screenings, and a book giveaway. Visit their website to view the schedule and purchase tickets.

Get a Taste of Black Heritage

Showcasing the diverse food, businesses, products and services from the local Black community, A Taste of Black Gwinnett will offer free admission, food and drink samples for purchase, and a special Black “Youthpreneurs” theme. The event will be held at the Norcross Cultural Arts and Community Center on Friday, February 16. Check out the Gwinnett County Black Chamber of Commerce site for more information.

Support Black Women-Owned Businesses

The Sistah Shop will host a Black History Month market during two weekends in February: Feb. 17 and 18 and Feb. 24 and 25. Located indoors at Atlantic Station, the market will feature more than 40 Black woman-owned brands, live music, giveaways, a hot chocolate bar and more.

Take an African American Art Stroll

City of Dunwoody, Georgia's Black History Month mural exhibit, featuring five artists, will be on display at Brook Run Skate Park through the month of February. Meet this year’s featured artists and get a preview.
