Career development and progression part 2
Last week, we talked about how to start the conversation with your employer about moving up in your career. Now that you’ve had that important chat with your employer —great job by the way! But what’s next? To keep things moving forward, it’s important to follow up and stay proactive. Here’s how to do just that.
Reflect on Your Last Conversation
Think back to what you and your manager discussed:
What feedback did you get?
What goals or actions were mentioned?
How does this fit with your long-term career plans?
Use this to guide your next steps.
Create a Simple Action Plan
Build on that conversation by setting clear, actionable goals:
Set Short-Term Goals: Break your big career dreams into smaller, achievable steps.
Develop Skills: Sign up for any training or projects that help you grow.
Track Your Progress: Keep an eye on your progress and adjust your plans as needed.
Stay on Your Manager’s Radar
Don’t let the conversation end there—keep your manager updated on your progress:
Regular Updates: Drop a quick update or have a brief check-in to show your progress.
Take on New Challenges: Volunteer for new projects or responsibilities that showcase your growth.
Keep the Conversation Going
Career growth is ongoing, so schedule regular follow-ups with your manager to review your progress and explore new opportunities.
Apply What You’ve Learned
As you gain new skills, start applying them to your work. Show your manager how you’re using what you’ve learned to add more value to the team.

1moMoving up in your career is key to secure your future in the job and have opportunities to make impact . One very important thing to note is to be a problem solver in your organization. Instead of you going to tell your manager what you are doing , the manager already know that you have competencies that add value to the organization and when opportunities come they will let you know. You can be a problem solver if you always think outside the box, have new ideas ,ready to take reasonable risk and be an addict in learning new skills in your industry etc
