A Business Journey

Someone once said Life was a journey not a destination and this analogy applies to your business too.

So you are taking a long drive. When you set out the sun is shining so your sunglasses are on and you are excited about the journey. But you are expecting the weather to change so who do you take with you on this long and potentially difficult trip?  You decide you will take three people with you.

A Traditional Compliance Accountant, a Business Growth Accountant and a Tax Planning Accountant.

The Compliance Accountant is the person in the group responsible for all of the paperwork to ensure you are safe and remain within the law. He makes sure that all documentation is up to date before you leave such as insurance, Road Tax and MOT, and during the journey he reminds you to pay the bills for petrol or tolls. He is the pessimist who always tells you to drive carefully and not take any risks. He lives in the past and is not looking towards the end of your journey. Instead he focusses on just picking up the pieces of paper that you are dropping along the way. No doubting how necessary this person is for the journey, but not the most exciting person so you make sure he is sitting in the back.

The Business Growth Accountant is your best friend. He is always positive and helps to keep you motivated. So he sits in the front with the maps and guides. He is both your navigator and your tour guide. He is listening to the engine to ensure it doesn’t miss a beat. He identifies any interesting landmarks or points of interest along the way. He knows where you are going as he has the map in front of him but he is generally focussed on what is happening today in the here and now. He is keen to keep you on track and moving forward to your destination.

The Tax Planning Accountant planned your trip. He spoke to you before you set off, to understand your aims and objectives. He wanted to know what was more important to you. Speed along a motorway or more slowly and taking in the scenery on the side roads. He created the detailed plan noting all of the twists and turns along the way. He constantly thinks about the future often glazing over as he gazes off into the distance. Trying to decide how to deal with potential hazards or roadblocks along the way. Always thinking about tomorrow. Best to put him in the back seat with the Traditional Compliance Accountant.

All very different but all having their role in your business journey. Only having one of them on your journey will make the trip more stressful, less certain and far less fun.
