5 Tips to Nail That Interview and STAND OUT from your Competition

I've spent many years in talent acquisition and seen it all from the best interviewers to the worst (and many in-between). Here are some quick tips and reminders that will help you put your best foot forward during the interview process.

  1. Project a positive tone and attitude (both in-person or during a phone interview): sometimes smiling while on the phone will come through to your interviewer on the other end. Be positive, smile, make eye contact, show that you're engaged in the conversation - no one wants to hire a negative Nelly.
  2. Do your research on the company: prior to your interview, check out the website, articles/publications and news about the company. Share 1-2 pieces of information with your interviewer, it shows that you've done your homework and have a genuine interest in the organization.
  3. Passive candidates: take the call, meet for coffee, be open to an informational discussion: even if you're not on the market, keep an open mind! Job security is no longer in existence in today's world and you never know when your position/job status may change. It's all about your network and helpful to build relationships with recruiters and hiring managers, plus, you may have a great referral and can help someone else out (Karma!!!)
  4. Prep for behavioral interview questions: most companies have a behavioral interview component so make sure that you prepare and have a few specific examples in mind. Be prepared to answer in the STAR interview response technique.
  5. Close the conversation with a few thoughtful questions: here are some of my go-to questions:
  • What are the challenges of the position?
  • What skills are needed in this role (technical skills and soft skills)?
  • How do you evaluate success and performance?
  • Who are your competitors and how do you stand out from your competition?
  • Why was the role created (is it a new role or replacement), how has it evolved and what are the goals for the position, team and company?
  • What is your leadership/management style?

Tying it all together: go into your interview dressed for success! Get a mani, style your hair, get that suit tailored and go in with confidence and be yourself! Also, a thank you note after the interview has become a long lost art these days. Spend a few minutes writing a personalized note to each interviewer (email is fine) and thank them for their time and also share are a few key takeaways from your discussion and emphasize your interest in the company. Go get em!!!
